Dell Power Problem

I've been having this "problem" for a few months now...

The whole system just shuts off randomnly.

I haven't been able to associate any particular event with these occurances... they just seem to "happen." They happened back when I was running Red Hat and have followed me over to Gentoo. I've tried the system with and without APM as I suspect it is a power supply problem. I have also run my laptop with out any batteries, with both in, one, the other, etc. and I still have the problem.

I'm asking for any advice or experience people may have with this problem as I am more or less unfamilar with what might be making it happen. Any suggestions would be appreciated (save buying a new laptop as I am a recent graduate (May 19th) and have very little loot to work with until I find a job... blasted economy!).
