Installing software?

I think it's installed correctly but nothing builds. I have a few things: gcc, slocate, apache, and mudix (something to do while I it works) but most things either 404 or give a compile error.

For instance,

xorg-x11 says error: medialibs/freetype-whatever failed
binutils says Couldn't download binutils-whatever-patches.. Aborting.

Is this normal; did something happen in the install or am I just missing something? (one persons mach.conf had mirrors "...") I used the universal so I thought thr basic development packages and KDE/Gnome was supposed to be there.

And how do I install qpkg?

I want a function desktop -- applications, KDE, etc.

But when I try to install most software it fails. For a while even slocate and lynx failed to install. I was supprised when apache installed correctly.

kdebase, the split thing kde-startkde (whatever), and xorg all error at media-libs/freetype-2.1.9-r1 failed. I cant look at what it says above so I really cant "post the topmost build error" from the consol.

Gnome has problems too.

I guess this is just a general compile problem which means gentoo must be installed correctly.

I just downloaded and burned the iso for the latest Gentoo dist.I chose the universal cd.When I boot to it all I get is the live cd version.I get nothing allowing me to actually install Gentoo on my system.I've just got a blinking curssor saying"livecd root# what's wrong?

Looking into it I found that it could be the c compiler executables problem. I've ran the fix for that but still no go. Other people have similar errors.

I'm not sure if its actually the "c compiler executalbe" though. And if it were then I've already fixed it.

Anyway, I did an env-update and now it says that libX11 is masked in package.mask. Mudix was masked becasue it was 32 bit but I added a line to my make.conf that got read of it. This one has an actual problem!

I just want a functioning computer. Installing debian was easier than this! apt-get install kde...

But I found a way to output compiler errors... emerge whatever >> file.

In your CFLAGs change -02 :arrow:

-O2 (the letter, not the number)

Thank you very very much!!

It outputed a buch of -gcc something about -02 on the consol as well when I ran emerge >> . I just thought -02 was superfluous to the current program or something. Hopefully I'll be able to work around the recently masked X11. But at least it's working now!
