Hadn't seen that, but same as with your other problem, one of you passwd or group file is probably borked.
Make sure they are both owned by root:root, permissions 644, and "visually" inspect them to make sure that
they are properly formatted, esp. the first lines.
Code:
saidar ~ # head -n 1 /etc/passwd /etc/group
==> /etc/passwd <==
root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash

==> /etc/group <==
root:x:0:root

all emerges failed
rebooted and it all works again

ssh started
AP started
GnuPG is emerging now

have never had a problem like this before
though i have not spent much time on gentoo till now

thanks again

Moved from Portage & Programming to Duplicate Threads, because it is just another manifestation of the problem discussed in the topic "no wheel group, no portage ... [SOLVED/FIXED???]".
