This is my first time installing Gentoo and I am not sure what all the USE variable should hold. Also, can it be edited later once everything is installed? Do i have to include "aim" to be able to chat on my aim account? I am installing on my laptop and it's just going to be a normal desktop but have a couple games, maybe do some programming, and maybe some stuff with GIMP. It's just going to be something I use for a bunch of random thing's and if I don't add stuff to USE will it hurt me? I believe I read there is a default for USE and wondering if that would be fine. |

Just go through the list and choose the flags you think you will need, you can always remove/add them later on if you want to. Also, for example, if you forget the X flag you will still install xorg when you emerge kde... but you won't compile in X support for some applications. When I used Gentoo on my desktop I had about 50 use flags. If you are not sure whether you should use a flag or not, just add it anyways, it won't do any harm. |
