I'm about to install Gentoo this weekend. I assume gcc builds everything? That's what I got out of the install manual I read.
Anyway, I'm running an AMD Athlon 1.33 GHz CPU (running right at 1.6 GHz), 256MB of RAM, 120GB HD (RAID-1 over 2 60GB HD's), GeForce4 Ti 4400, SBLive! Value. I'm going to be using my system for just day to day stuff, and a little gameing (mostly OpenGL Unreal Tournament and Quake III). But for the most part, I'll be downloading music, playing with digital imageing, surfin' the net, talking to friends, and doing office stuff.
Now, what I need to know is what optiminziations can I tell the gcc compiler to use when it compiles everything? What files do I need to optimize? I know I can optimize things in make.conf, but someone told me that there wasn't a whole lot I could do there.
Ideas? Links to point me in the right direction? Anything?

To do Athlon-specific optimizations, you probably want to run GCC3, though GCC3 might cause problems for you. (GCC3 is the default compiler for the 1.3x "beta" releases. 1.3a was a test, 1.3b is the 1.4 release candidate, and 1.4 will be the first official GCC3 release.)
Unless you want to be really agressive, the following should be stable and reasonably fast:
Code: | CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-march=i686 -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
CXXFLAGS="-march=i686 -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" |

-fomit-frame-pointer is known to break several packages (mostly to do with KDE) well not using KDE so who cares, but such optimisations flags, should better be supplied by the developer, because then can give some strange problems. But well I'm just a person who want a fast but still stable system, so don't listen to me,

Okay. I'll want to use GCC3 then......
How do I use it to build Gentoo?

Grab the 1.3b ISO, and go from there. |
