I recently had a network card that was failing frequently, so I replaced it. I'm not sure what the make/model of it was, but it used the tulip module. I put a new card in there, and it uses the 8139cp (or 8139too.. actually, it looks like it autoloaded both of them) module. The old card came up as eth0. When I installed it, I shut it down, removed the old card, installed the new, booted, compiled the modules I needed, rebooted. But the new card keeps coming up as eth1. Not a big issue, but I was just wondering why it doesn't assign it the first available ethernet network device.

Code:
[cmccurdy@bender ~]
[11:07 AM] 3 > dmesg | grep eth
eth0: RealTek RTL8139 at 0x8800, 00:0a:cd:12:cd:25, IRQ 19
eth0:  Identified 8139 chip type 'RTL-8100B/8139D'
eth1: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0x45E1

It appears that it does show it as eth0 at first, but then it assigns it eth1 for some reason.
