Well, I think I have another problem,

glxinfo has me on for direct rendering but has "disabling TCL support" near the top of it as well as glxgears. Any info on that?

Plus my glxgears seem to be quite low compared to others:
660fps 1280x1024 24bit depth
1800+ 512MD SDRAM Radeon 7000

StarWarsHater:

You, I might be able to help. That is the same system I have got, except my CPU is slower. Could you perhaps post your /usr/src/linux/.config and your /etc/X11/XF86Config files, so that I might take a look at them, see if I can suggest some pointers.

My setup is working a bit better. For those still struggling, here's what I've done (mostly just a rehash of previous posts).

First, when compiling my kernel, I needed to set several options:

Processor type and reatures -> MTRR (Memory Type Range Register) support: Yes
Character devices -> /dev/agpgart (AGP Support): Yes

Then below that, you have to select yes for the type of motherboard you have. It should be safe to set them all to yes, but you only need the one for your system. For mine, it was the "Intel 440LX/BX/GX and ... support."

I also turned off "Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 DRI support)."

Then after compiling and installing my kernel, I re-emerged xfree-drm to refresh the radeon module, which I have set to auto-load.

I have my /etc/XF86Config set up as described in earlier posts: I uncommented the lines to load the glx and dri modules in the section "Module." I added the "DRI" section with Mode set to 0666. I'm using the "radeon" driver in the "Device" section.

I am not using the ati-drivers. I believe that the setup for using them is a bit different, and I haven't investigated it.

Now glxinfo reports that it is using the direct rendering, and glxgears went from 260fps to 499fps with the default window size. I'm running at about 1600x1000 with 24bpp (yes, it's an odd-sized monitor). My card is a Radeon VE with 32MB.

Star Wars Hater:
The .config file is the file that contains all the information about which kernel options to compile. It is generated when you run make menuconfig. It is a hidden file (because it starts with a .) in the /usr/src/linux directory (this directory links to the actual directory that your kernel source lives in.

crowbert:
My machine has a Radeon 64Mb ViVo, and the CPU is an athlon-tbird 1GHz, with 512Mb of SDRAM. I get ~900FPS from glxgears, runnign 1600x1200x24bit. How does your machines speed compare, because maybe that is all you should be getting? How does tuxracer run? Okay, or unplayable?

I'm running a 2.53GHz P4 with 1GB SDRAM, so my machine is faster than yours. However, my Radeon is a 32MB card, and /proc/pci reports it as a "Radeon VE QY," which is apparently a 7000 dual display edition. So your card may be better. I haven't installed tuxracer yet.

I think I'll call doubling the performance a win and move on. Maybe next I'll find a second monitor and see what I can do with that.

StarWarsHater:

Try going recompiling your kernel, removing, after turning OFF Character Devices>Direct Rendering Management (XFree86 DRI Support). Then type emerge xfree-drm, with the USE flags that I posted before. Then rmmod radeon, insmod radeon, and start x, see if that helps!

Tried it, netted me about 10fps :(

At least it gave me an opportunity to remove some stuff I didn't need in my kernel :)

Have you re-emerged xfree-drm since your last kernel compile? If you haven't try that!

umerged and re-emerged :(

I dunno if I just wanna take 370fps and be happy (since one of my friends can't even get that as of now)

Might re-do my whole gentoo, I probably have done something stupid or something old is conflicting, etc etc. This is my learning experience after all

Are you sure that you require generic SiS support. That could be causing problems if you don't need that. What motherboard do you have?

ECS K7S5A (SiS 735 Chipset)

did some searching and googling, other people use the generic SiS support and say its fine. Odd.

But then again it is odd that Samba mounts will only connect to my Windows box with username=Administrator and no other users, including other admin accounts O_o At least it mounts.

Same with this, it works, kinda. Just not as expected.

FINALLY got this damn thing working. If you are still having trouble I recommend that you enable AGP (in kernel, not module) and turn on ALL boards if you dont know which you have (but leave dri/drm stuff off) I thought I had the i810.. Im an idiot.. 845.. anyways, went from 280 to 1570!

Also turn on AGP to 4X in XF86config if you have it (Option "AGPMode" "4")
check "man radeon" for more about the dif. options

THANK YOUUUUUU!!!

btw, compaq presario 2800T, 64 MB Radeon M7 (7500M) 2 GHz, 512 DDR RAM

[edit]
OMFG turn on Option EnablePageFlip "True" and I jumped to 1920!!!!

280 -> 1570 -> 1920!!!! happy day!!!!

Well the glxinfo says your rendering is working and lists the right driver (I think)

1) Has it always been at 370 fps?
2) Did you remember all the tidbits
---emerge xfree-drm AFTER doing kernel (to overwrite any other radeon drivers
---opengl-update xfree (?)
3) what's your XFConfig looking like?

btw, I could be wrong about compiling in all boards... someone else suggested and since my problem was I chose the wrong one I threw it out there.

I knew I had the wrong board because in my /var/log/XFree86.0.log (I think it is) it said something about AGP not working and my card being strictly PCI.

I guess I dont know much about XFree/graphics/drivers, but I was wondering if this driver can turn my device into a framebuffer device and if so, will this make transparencies for things like karamba better, or is that a little while off?

BTW, once you get some nice framerates for glxgear, try celestia. It's pretty cool. (open it and hit d for a demo)

Yes, I've been stuck at 370 give or take.
Get 538fps in 16bit color.

I've re-emerged DRM after the kernel re-compile.

Probably gonna reset up Gentoo, since I've got all the kinks in my install process down. But now, time for sleep. :D

XFConfig is in a post above, haven't changed anything.

glxinfo has me on for direct rendering but has "disabling TCL support" near the top of it as well as glxgears. Any info on that?

Plus my glxgears seem to be quite low compared to others:
660fps 1280x1024 24bit depth
1800+ 512MD SDRAM Radeon 7000

This may indicate that your card does not have hardware TCL support, which could explain the lower framerates. Also it doesn't help that it uses SDRAM. Since DRI is actually enabled it may just be the limit of your card, unless you know otherwise from others who have it.

Otherwise the gods are just frowning upon you because you're an Aggie who hates Star Wars

It could be, you certainly have DRI enabled. I was under the impression that all radeon cards had TCL (Transform, Clipping, Lighting) because that is the T&L that all modern gfx cards have. You are right ot have generic SiS support though. I would try researching the specifications of your card in regards to its T&L engine. If you are unlucky, it just won't work :(

I've gone from 499fps to 612fps with the options in my "Device" section:
Code:

    Option "AGPMode" "4"
    Option "AGPFastWrite" "True"
    Option "EnablePageFlip" "True"

Still not close to the 1920fps that guy reported, but he has a better card.

1) Try editing out the PCI 1:0:0 line under device in XF86Config. I dont know if this changes anything, but this was one of the things I tried.

Also, try posting your /var/log/XFree86.0.log

First things first: There's nothing wrong with an Aggie that doesn't like Star Wars :)

On to business:
Quoted from the http://dri.sourceforge.net/doc/DRIuserguide.html about the Radeon 7x00 series:
Quote:

While this driver supports many of the features of ATI Radeon cards, we do not yet fully support the card's TCL features. This work is progressing, but is not yet ready.

So maybe one day I will have it, just not yet.

Tried the editing out PCI 1:0:0, no dice. Same score.
