Probably something dumb I've done, but it's not really apparent to me. When I do:
Code:

sparky ~ # emerge -vauDN world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating world dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] sys-devel/gcc-3.4.6-r2  USE="fortran nls (-altivec) -bootstrap -boundschecking -build -d% -doc -gcj -gtk (-hardened) -ip28 -ip32r10k (-multilib) -multislot (-n32) (-n64) -nocxx -nopie -nossp -objc -test -vanilla" 97 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 97 kB

Would you like to merge these packages? [Yes/No]

I end up with:
Code:

>>> Unpacking gcc-3.4.6.tar.bz2 to /var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/gcc-3.4.6-r2/work
>>> Unpacking gdc-0.23-src.tar.bz2 to /var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/gcc-3.4.6-r2/work/gcc-3.4.6/gcc

!!! ERROR: sys-devel/gcc-3.4.6-r2 failed.

!!! gdc-0.23-src.tar.bz2 does not exist

I'm using the stable tree with the 2006.1 profile:
Code:

sparky ~ # emerge --info
Portage 2.1.2.2 (default-linux/sparc/sparc64/2006.1, gcc-3.4.6, glibc-2.3.6-r5, 2.6.17-gentoo-r8 sparc64)
=================================================================
System uname: 2.6.17-gentoo-r8 sparc64 sun4u
Gentoo Base System release 1.12.9
Timestamp of tree: Sat, 10 Mar 2007 00:20:01 +0000
dev-lang/python:     2.4.3-r4
dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r5
sys-apps/sandbox:    1.2.17
sys-devel/autoconf:  2.13, 2.61
sys-devel/automake:  1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2, 1.10
sys-devel/binutils:  2.17
sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.3.14
sys-devel/libtool:   1.5.22
virtual/os-headers:  2.6.11-r6
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="sparc"
AUTOCLEAN="yes"
CBUILD="sparc-unknown-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-mcpu=ultrasparc -mtune=ultrasparc -O2 -pipe"
[...]

I tried wiping out
Code:
 rm /usr/portage/distfiles/gcc-3.4.6-*
but it doesn't help. I didn't see anything in bugzilla about it, so it's probably my own damn fault, just not sure why.

Thanks
/iMike

it's not your fault: bug 170230

running emerge --sync should fix it.
