Hello,
I have to ask the gurus about this weird problem of mine: I have just installed gentoo on a new PC and browsing http://www.google.com or http://www.gamespy.com using links does work, but many other websites don't, timing out after sending the request, including http:///www.gentoo.org, debian.org, or even microsoft.com.

We have a lan behind an ADSL modem/router, essentially made of Windows XP boxes, plus an ubuntu one. They are all capable of browsing aforementioned sites. Only the new gentoo one is having trouble.

Actually, even the gentoo install CD suffered from this: I realized it when I tried to wget the stage 3 and portage tarballs. I had to install a proxy on a windows machine to complete the installation, hoping that bringing the system up to date would solve the problem automagically.

The conf.d/net file is basic, with no dhcp, and using a previously non-assigned IP.
I also verified that dns is working, pinging www.gentoo.org for instance returned response from kiwi.gentoo.org or loon.gentoo.org .
The kernel was built with genkernel. Both 8139cp and 8139too modules were loaded, but unloading 8139cp or completely removing it did not change anything.

Has anyone dealt with this before?

hmm, for me that smells like a wrong mtu size. check with "ifconfig". normally a NIC has 1500.

Or a window scaling issue.

mtu size is the standard 1500.

Thank you desultory, it was indeed a window scaling issue. I am afraid I would never have found this out on my own!
