Shadow vs. pam-login

Could someone please give me the executive summary about the issue of shadow and pam-login? I recently tried installing Modular-X because the monolithic-X I had on the machine was blocking everything but ultraviolet rays (maybe that too - it is wintertime).

After removing all the blockers, x-windows worked pretty well, but I could not log in after reboot!! I kept a log of everything I did to clean up, and one item was removing pam-login (which was blocking shadow). When I tried to emerge pam-login back in, maybe it's my mirror or what, it says there is no such thing as pam-login?

Then I emerged shadow and now I'm allowed to log in again! You guys could tell me RTFM, I'm cool with that, but I'm still busy repairing the rest of the damage.
