Random colored characters in my console--any idea why?

I don't notice this much, since I often spend time in a GUI environment, but every so often I'll boot to a character console and do my upgrades from there, or wotever.

I've noticed a curious thing happening; periodically, one of the characters on a line, usually in the third row, will appear colored, usually orange or green. This colored character stands out from the rest of the black and white text, and scrolls up the screen as if it was meant to be that way.

But it's weird, and seems random, and I can't figure out what the devil it could be. Could someone enlighten me?

Did the screen go to sleep? I've found that when logged into the console, after the screen blanks the colored chars stay for some reason.
