Somebody should really place this in the portage tree!
I am downloading the cd right now but I find it pretty unecessary to download a whole cd only because of the game. |

I have the game installed and running fine, the performance however doesn't seem to be too good at the moment. Frame rates are 100+ while walking around but they drop down to 15fps all the time whenever you get some action on screen. Dropping resolution and turning all the settings off hasn't really improved it much so I'm not sure whats going on. The mouse seems to be really jerky while strafing as well.
Also the player skins are too bright and adjusting the brightness and gamma in game doesn't seem to change them at all.
Im still happy with the game though, hopefully it will improve a bit with some patching. |

This game is a fascist game to turn people into braindead cannon-fodder, you should be ashamed of it, ashamed to pay taxes only for army and cops rather than paying taxes for education, health and culture. You american are so insane, you should get rid of your government before it gets rid of you ! |

Oh yes. What a novel idea. I'll promptly go take a walk up to the White House and remove my government. I was kinda bored today, but now I have something to do!
Thank you cylgalad, you have made my day complete. |

on the subject of an ebuild, i'm a dialup user and i could see the benefit in having a smaller download (ala an America's Army ebuild that only downloads the game), but possibly the game is subject to some sort of distribution restrictions? (the game itself isnt GPL as far as i know, it's "free as in beer") and i really wouldnt like to see Gentoo get itself into hot water over something like this.
i think what we really need is just some set guidelines for installing the america's army game from the GameCD. however, does this break any restrictions (if any) placed on the game distribution?
perhaps someone who's allready downloaded it (i'm still waiting for my download to complete... yes it's been going solid for a few nights at 4K/s :) ) can have a look around for a license for us to clear up these issues.
thanks,
mike. |

I can't extract this, because:
Code: |
#/usr/src/cloop-0.68/extract_compressed_fs livecd.cloop > livecd2
<cut>
Block 1378 length 44188 => 65536
Block 1379 length 32330 => 65536
Block 1380 length 16292 => 65536
Block 1381 length 15290 => 65536
Block 1382 length 14467 => 65536
Uncomp: not enough out room 1382 |
I have available 5.4GB on disk.
UPDATE: I've copied almost all files from booted livecd, but two files are corrupted (armyops170/Textures/T-TERRAIN.utx and /armyops170/StaticMeshes/M2-vehicles.usx). Can anybody give me theese files (via http/ftp)? |

Okay, nearly 2 weeks later, I've finished my iso download. Good ol modem. I miss cable.
Anyway, finally got the damn thing. Now i'm trying to copy it to disk so I can run it.
Following the last post on page 1 of this thread, here's what I did.
downloaded cloop_0.68-3.tar.gz (instead of the cloop_0.68-2.tar.gz version since it is not there anymore.
compiled as above without any problems.
mounted the iso without any problems.
then tried to extract with (but using my correct paths)
Code: | extract_compressed_fs /cdrom/livecd.cloop > aa.e2fs |
it runs for a while okay until I get
Code: |
...snip...
Block 4371 length 32184 => 65536
Block 4372 length 33101 => 65536
Uncomp: input corrupt 4372
|
Thats where the show stops.
So any idea's anyone.
(Yes, I know I probably have a corrupted iso image due to the long download, repeated restarts and generally awful luck, but I'm hoping some one can just tell me I did something silly which can be easily fixed. and no, getting cable isn't a fix I have the option of attempting seeing as I am still in an analogue area)
So any easy fixes that don't involve me downloading a 524meg iso image via modem again?
Hmm. that's a thought.. my iso image size is
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 524410880 May 13 18:09 aa-20030513.iso
how about anyone elses?
Regards,
Ant.

Code: | -rw-r--r-- 1 jester root 524410880 May 18 00:09 aa-20030513.iso |
size looks right - I extracted mine from inside my regular gentoo and all was peachy - I mounted the cd (which didn't work when I tried to run it) with cloop as opposed to the iso image on the hard-drive to do this

Well, seeing as our file sizes matched, I gained new hope and had another bash at it from a different angle. Alas, it was not to be.
This time I mounted the cloop file using the kernel module.
Code: |
modprobe -a cloop file=/mnt/cdrom/livecd.cloop
mount -o ro /dev/cloop /mnt/tmp/
cd /mnt/tmp/
ls
bin dev home lib mnt proc sbin usr
boot etc install.txt lost+found opt root tmp var
ls opt
.keep ati
armyops170 blackdown-jre-1.4.1
cp -Rdp opt/armyops170 /opt/
|
at which point the cp command, (and any other file system command on /mnt/tmp directory for example ls) locks up and is not killable. (cannot kill -9, cannot force umount, cannot force module to unload, will probably have to reboot at some point)
anyway, at least I got to see the armyops170 directory this time. I've still got my money on a corrupted download.
Anyone else got any thoughts or suggestions.
For those that also had the lockup problems (and have cable), did you try downloading the file again and retrying your commands? Did this work?

Ant - are you in your regular gentoo when you mount the iso (image or cd?)?
One suggestion is to go in under root in kde, mount the image/cd with cloop and then use konq to browse to the opt/armyops170 directory and copy it
it's close to 390MB if I remember correctly and took a while to copy from the CD
if you're successful you can just right click to set permissions _________________ I tried installing Suse Linux off the Internet. It got stuck in the middle somewhere.Installing off the Internet is for the birds. |

TJ,
Yeah, I'm running as root. I'm mounting the iso image. (haven't burnt it to disk since if it is corrupt it's a waste of a CD, besides, I just plan to copy it to disk anyway)
I am not sure you can mount the iso image with cloop, however, when I reboot I will give it a try.
I'll also try having a look through the armyops subdirectory before copying it next time to see what is there. The lockup is definitely a lockup and not just a slow response due to a large copy size.
Using kde and konq won't change the lock up problems. (Plus I use gnome and don't have kde installed)
Thanks for the suggestions.
BTW: Are you sure your mounting the iso image (or cdrom) with cloop and not actually mounting the livecd.cloop file (which is on the cdrom) with cloop. I would expect you are using cloop to mount the livecd.cloop file rather than the iso image itself?? |

you're right - I mounted the livecd.cloop file not the iso - I did it from the cd though - I'd never messed with that stuff before but it worked straighht off for me, so I'd say I'm still mixing up my terminology
I'm not sure, but it may come down to memory, swap and diskspace, just for reference
1.5G SDRAM PC133 CAS2
1.5 G swap (undoubtedly too much)
2x P3-1G
HD=Seagate 36G scsi 15k rpm - /= 15G reiser
kernel = 2.4.20-gaming-r3 _________________ I tried installing Suse Linux off the Internet. It got stuck in the middle somewhere.Installing off the Internet is for the birds. |

All this would be moot if Icculus.org would release America's Army and we could make an ebuild for it. I heard that icculus.org was giving GentooGames a weeks head start, but it's been a week and a half with no word from them.
Anybody know what the hold up is? Or if there is an ETA from icculus.org? _________________ "Life would be so much easier if we could see the source code" |

Yea.. my only complain about this game is that its a bit slow. ... 10 frames a second slow... lol... One would think that with all the stuff turned off it would work just fine on an Athlon 800 w/ 256 megs of RAM and a Geforce 2 GTS.
Oh well... guess my computer is gettin' outdated . |

If you just want a simple solution to getting America's Army onto your HDD so that you can play it from a normal boot, do the following:
- Boot the CD and get to a shell
- mount your HDD
Code: | mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/gentoo change hda1 to your hdd device |
copy the America's Army files Code: | cp -R /opt/armyops170 /mnt/gentoo/opt/ |
Now reboot into your normal system, and run the following to play:
Code: | /opt/armyops170/System/armyops-bin |

It has been 7 years. When will an ebuild be available in portage? |

For a game using the UT3 engine? Not likely. |

Don't know the exact details, but long story short: There was a linux version, now there isn't one and most certainly never will be one again.
I guess you could still install and run the "most current" linux version, which would be a few years old, if you get the files somewhere.
But you won't be able to play on any current version server online, so you might as well forget about it. |
