Lots of USE-flags, I know. But my HDD can deal with the extra space requirement, my Phenom X4 and 8GB RAM make the overhead negligible, and I prefer to have all features I might want to use already there so I don't have to spend extra time recompiling when I need something.

Am I the only one, but this doesn't fit at all :
Code:

# ---[Compiler Settings]---
CFLAGS="-O2 -march=nocona -mtune=nocona -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
CHOST="i486-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS} -fvisibility-inlines-hidden"

++, however all the USE="${USE}... entries seem excessive, you can have USE flags span multiple lines without escaping, so just one USE="${USE}.. per each of his five Use sections would be neater IMO.

Just a guess as to the reasoning, but changing CHOST can be rather problematic if you start from a stage 3 (which is why there are i686 stage 3's in the first place...).

Although the -mtune=nocona is redundant.

You have installed Gentoo with the wrong tarball.

You need to install your box with the i686 tarball, because now, you have a 486 compiler and you try to compile your thing for a Core 2 duo processor.

is it possible to change that without reinstalling my whole system?

Sort of. You'll have to reemerge everything.

And ugly problems can arise from changing your CHOST.

zixnub: I think you'll want to read this;
