Hello

I try to emerge VLC. Everything goes well but at the end it seems to work only in the terminal !!!
I certainly do something wrong or forget something as I have a other linux box with Debian and the same version of VLC (0.8.2) and I have a GUI on this one :?

I have searched through portage database but I see nothing related to an interface for VLC

Someone can explain me how to do it ?

Thanks for your help

ericc

Try to emerge VLC with these USE flags in /etc/portage/package.use :
Code:

media-video/vlc dvd ffmpeg mpeg mad wxwindows aac dts a52 ogg flac theora oggvorbis matroska freetype bidi xv svga gnutls stream vlm httpd cdda vcd cdio live

they are recommended by VLC team.

Especially wxwindows USE flag is very important if you want GUI in Vlc.

Thanks Cerbero !!

Again this damned variable USE
but you learn me something more : we can specify parameter for USE, software by software ... May be I should have a complete read of the documentation of Portage

Last week, i install XFCE4 and I had some trouble as I can't choose the Backdrop I want 8O
Later, I install GDM to have a nice Display Manager, and again I can't choose the Theme I want 8O 8O
.... And suddenly I realise that my system doesn't support Jpeg format because I dont put it in the USE variable

I don't know if in the documentation, we can find a complete list of all the possible parameters of USE ...

On official Gentoo site there is description of every USE flag:
http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/use-index.xml

Some of them should be set globally in make.conf and some should be set only locally in package.use.
Also if you have gentoolkit installed than you can use euse tool to view shortened description of every USE flag.
Code:
euse -i <use flag>

I had no gui either but this fixed it.
Maybe there should be a default /etc/portage/package.use?

I also need to put:
x11-libs/wxGTK unicode
in /etc/portage/package.use
