Im on a p3 733 with 128 RAM. I did a stage1 install of Gentoo 1.4 rc4 with the following settings:

Code:

USE="qt kde -gnome -gtk"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-march=pentium3 -Os -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

I have the linux-2.4.20-gentoo-r5 kernel, sysklogd, vcron (and grub). After the reboot when i first logged in, i noticed 13 MB RAM was used (i built most stuff into the kernel and not as modules) and 739 MB on my root partition /dev/hda3 (reiserFS). After clearing /var/tmp/portage and /usr/portage/distfiles i had 589 MB used on /dev/hda3.

My impression at that point was that 13 MB RAM used after booting is nice, but that 589 MB on /dev/hda3 was a bit big for the "minimum" installation compiled with -Os.

I continued and emerged vim, xfree, nvidia-glx, nvidia-kernel, and KDE. After these packages were installed, i once again cleared the two directories and found that I had 1161 MB used on /dev/hda3. And after emerging xfree, the amount of RAM used after a reboot went up to 14 even though i didnt do any rc-update :)

So to summarize, my Gentoo installation is around 589 MB with -Os, and with KDE added, it takes up about 1161 MB. How big is a system with roughly the same components, but built with for example -O3 or -O2 ? It would be very interesting to know :)

(i know the kernel source is still lying around.. hehe)

Um, I think you'll find that when you decompress the tarball to install them, they'll be around 200MB. :roll:
