PostPosted: Sat Feb 17, 2007 11:22 pm    Post subject: ATI freezes on restart of X Reply with quote

I haven't seen this posted for a long time, but I am still having issues with my ATi drivers. I can startx once, but if I logout and restart X my computer freezes. It is still responsive since I can ssh into it, which shows X running at 99% CPU. If I kill the process via ssh the computer hardlocks and requires a restart.

The issue I have seems different than the others posted since I do not use X/K/GDM but .xinitrc and startx from a console. I can successfully start X once, logout and reboot however.

Other related information is that I cannot use VT's [common] and I have removed all framebuffers from my kernel as I've seen that posted as a possible source of the problem. It should also be noted that there are no errors in dmesg or Xorg.log and they look identical to the first instance of X started which works correctly.

The last drivers that worked fully for me are the 8.23.7 drivers. I am using the ~x86 drivers 8.33.6 & the latest stable kernel 2.6.19-r5.

Moved from Unsupported Software to Desktop Environments as the ATi drivers are in portage, and are therefore supported.

Please can you post your emerge --info?

Same problem here.

My graphic card is an Ati Radeon 9500 Pro (R300 chipset) and I'm using the latest (8.33.6) Ati proprietary drivers and i'm running it on a 2.6.19-gentoo-r4 box. My card has a DVI and a VGA connectors and i'm using the DVI one.

Here is my xorg.conf (only the important sections).

There is only radeon in VIDEO_CARDS because I emerged ati-drivers (fglrx) later.

Without the line Option "ForceMonitors" "notv" under the device Section I can't even start X the first time.

I need to solve this problem because I use xgl and beryl and sometimes I need to switch to a plain x.org session in order to use 3d acceleration.

Thanks in advance.

Up :)

I wonder if this is a common problem with r300 and ati proprietary drivers or if it is something related to the fact that my (our?) boards have two connectors.

Yea, I ran across that yesterday when researching this, so I wonder if its a DVI problem. I am building a new PC [actually got everything today] so I will be moving this PC and connecting it to a CRT, so I will see if that is the cause.

I removed the line "video=vesafb:mtrr3,ywrap,1280x1024-32@70" from my grub.conf and I tried again with the DVI connector. In this case when I restart X I get a lot of colored vertical lines and a black square that I can move with mouse (the pointer, I suppose :) ).

If I use the only the VGA connector (I pulled out the DVI connector) when X starts again it starts loading gnome (I can see the gnome splash screen) but it hangs after some seconds.

I don't have the framebuffer support in the kernel, I followed the Ati drivers howto from the wiki.

I have an issue similar. If I start xdm, then stop it, the screen just goes black and stays black. I can still interact though, because if I restart xdm from the command line by typing blindly, it comes up.

As I wrote above, I got nearly the same results on a LCD monitor using only the VGA connector.

Just for curiosity: what card do you have?

Its an X700 AGP, I just synced and got the new ATi driver, maybe it will fix it. I'm not too optimistic since the last 20 or so haven't fixed the issue.

I'm going to try the latest drivers in the next days, too. Maybe the latest kernel (2.6.20) could fix this issue but I wouldn't bet on it. I'm wondering if this is an issue related with AGP cards. Is there anybody with a PCI express board experiencing this problem out there?

Yep,

I've the same problem with a ATI X700 PCI-e (RV410) on a A8V-E Deluxe. X hangs when I tried to switch to a terminal console or when login out X. Sometimes system is alive and I can shut it down from remote login (ssh).

ATI Drivers: 8.32.5
Kernel: 2.6.18-gentoo-r6
XOrg: 7.1.1
TFT monitor with DVI conexion

Everything else is working fine: hardware acceleration and so on

That seems to be the same. I guess they have no plans on fixing it either since it is not even listed in their "known issues" My new PC has an nVidia card and works beautifully, I will never purchase another ATi card again.

Have You tried latest 8.34.8 version?
It fixed hangs on resume and I just checked and didn't noticed hangs on X restart (Crtl+Alt+Backspace or auto restart on logout).

I posted earlier I updated to the latest 8.34.8 version, which of course, did not fix anything. I believe this is related to the switching VT's problem since both produce the exact same results. As you can see here: http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=37 The bug has been around for over 2 YEARS now and still no fix.

I use Ati Radeon Xpress 200M (intergrated into my nx6125 laptop) and 32bit Gentoo, so its quite different then Yours.

Just another shot:
Do You use vesafb? Since I enabled 1400x1024 in my console, I can't suspend to ram. It hangs when it should turn off almost everything except RAM. "Unfortunately" X-restart is fine, without problems.

With earlier ati drivers, I had often X-restart hangs (I don't remember which version did or did not). I used then this in console (Ctrl+Alt+Fn):

/etc/init.d/xdm stop; rmmod fglrx; /etc/init.d/xdm start

and it worked.

I have the same problem here.
Screen locks if I try to logout or switch the user.
Only CTRL + ALT + BACKSPACE helps.

Ah OK, actually the PC that the ATi card is in is a 32-bit P4, my new system is an amd64 [with an nVidia card].

I have no framebuffer in the kernel since I was trying to eliminate that as a source of the problem. When I had used a framebuffer, after logging out of X the screen would become garbled but it was still responsive, e.g. I could log into root and reboot blindly or ssh into the box, but still couldn't restart X.

Which ATI module are you using?
The problems startet for me after I compiled
the newest stable kernel from kernel.org (2.6.20.3).
I use the radeon module from the kernel not fglrx.
Maybe there is a bug in the module?

This bug is unsupportable, the bug is in the fglrx binary blob, it trashes the ttys in the kernel, I've reported it to ATi but they ignore it.
