how to pass flags to ebuilds

I want to compile libgphoto2 with this flag:

CPPFLAGS="-DCANON_EXPERIMENTAL_20D"

How would I do that in a merge?

I think the manual way would be:

CPPFLAGS="-DCANON_EXPERIMENTAL_20D" ./configure
