Hello all,

I am thinking about the ever (exponentially?) expanding portage tree, disk space it consumes on my machine, and time taken to sync it:

Surely there is no need to store all the ebuilds and metadata on the local machine.

Perhaps for all the packages you have in your world and system, and their dependencies, this is a good idea, but 99% of the tree is stuff you never use, and never will.

Wouldn't it be better to only maintain a local list of valid package names, and then an emerge retrieves the necessary part of the tree. This is not high bandwidth stuff.

Otherwise this long term growth is going to make syncing and tree maintenance crippling for originally feasible machines with little storage and grunt.

Or am I missing something?

Andy

Moved from Portage & Programming to Duplicate Threads. Here are a few threads about it:

Selective emerge rsync to cut down on bandwidth usage
feature that would take much load off the sync-servers
