I got KDE and its dependencies built and installed on my Gentoo system. I just happened to do a w when I had several konsole windows open. It didn't show any users logged in. Obviously something in wtmp is not being updated. Does anyone know how to correct this?

konsole does not start login shells, hence they are not listed as users. Change your default profile to launch bash --login instead of bash and you'll be fine.

That didn't seem to work. I even started bash manually with the --login option and the login wasn't showing up. If I start an xterm a login is correctly registered.
