First here is my rig:
MSI KT400 Ultra
Radeon 9700 AIW pro
so far I have gotten everything to "work" excpet getting into X. I have emerged the ati drivers and xfree but when I go through and configure using xfre86config I get the following errors:
No matching device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found
Symbol drmGetClient from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.o is unresolved!
fatal server error:
failed to initialize core devices
Hopefully someone can help a wannabe getooer out 
and yes I read (and followed) the instructions on this site. |

Sorry for the double post ........ it wasn't showing up in 'doze
I can't post my conifg because I can't get into X to put it up here. And 'doze can't see the other machine to get the file up here.
Not much help ......... sorry
Is there something I should be looking for? |

| i would emerge lynx for a start. its a console based browser and you should be able to post your config. also do an lsmod (as root) to see if the modules you need are loaded. if not try an insmod radeon before starting X. |

The name of the driver that the ati-drivers package creates is fglrx.
Here is a sample from my XF86Config for you to look at.

I think the problem might be that you are trying to run with "radeon" specified as the driver, when it should be fglrx.
Try using fglrxconfig to generate an XF86Config file. You can always tweak it once you have it working properly.

| I tried that but when I tried fglrxconfig it couldn't find that command. I'm starting over so when I emerge the ati drivers I will try that command again. Thanks for your help....... you are correct I had the radeon part in for driver name. I will try you rsuggestions. |

I have reloaded and recompiled my kernel WITHOUTH DRI support (as per some instructions I saw. Now when I try to start X I get the following error:
(WW) fglrx:No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:01)
(EE) fglrx(0): [agp] unbale to acquire AGP, error "xf86_ENODEV"
(EE) fglrx(0): cannot init AGP
This is on a MSI KT400 ULTRA with a 9700 AIW Pro. Hopefully someone can help me out. Here is my XF86Config-4:

That is one nuts XF86Config!
First, you can just delete all this section. Looks like you have another video card on the pci bus- but you don't need it.

thanks for your reply. I thought it looked a little long ..... I tried that and it didn't help either  ........... I'm redoing my kernel right now as the error I got now is that X could find the agpgart module. I had it configured to load in the kernel and am trying now to load it as a module to see what happens. |

| I have a problem with my laptop where if I have a pcmcia card inserted, I lose access to /dev/psaux and XFree refuses to startup. Maybe the problems are somehow similar. |

Hey people, just started using gentoo, well accualy already am using it for a week i think. :p My previous distro was Redhat so this is a big step for me.
Currently i am stuck with the radeon problem too. (can't start X)
I have a Radeon9700 pro.
Mow, i get the exact same error as you have, so if you found a solution by now, please tell me what you did, otherwise, give me your mail or something, then i can tell you what to do if i find it. :p
btw, i like the community of Gentoo, keep it up guys ... ;p |
