So:

I emerge sync, and then:

Code:

orthanc root # emerge -up world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies ...done!

Then I notice something:

Code:

orthanc root # emerge -s gentoo-sources
Searching...
[ Results for search key : gentoo-sources ]
[ Applications found : 1 ]

*  sys-kernel/gentoo-sources
      Latest version available: 2.4.20-r5
      Latest version installed: 2.4.20-r2
Size of downloaded files: 30,816 kB
      Homepage:    http://www.gentoo.org/ http://www.kernel.org/
Description: Full sources for the Gentoo Kernel.

So my version is definetly three r-releases out of date.

Anybody got a clue why this is happening? (I assume that various other packages have this problem as well, although I haven't gone looking)

Thanks!

Have you accepted x86 in /etc/make.conf?
If not try and uncomment that line and try again. :)

Further research has suggested that I try --deep.

Here we go:

Code:

orthanc root # emerge -up --deep world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[ebuild    U ] dev-python/python-fchksum-1.6.1-r1 [1.6.1]

[ebuild    U ] app-cdr/cdrtools-2.01_alpha05 [1.11.33]

Well, that helped.

However, the "old" behavior of portage never required a --deep option to do this correctly; is this a new feature, or did I just have a bad moment and have a database file or some such get zapped?

Thanks!

Re: LimeFrog

Where, exactly? The ACCEPT line seems adamant that only ~arch should go there - I don't want unstable packages, just the most recent versions of stable ones.

Should I put "x86" there, without the ~?

Code:
ACCPEPT "~x86"

I'm not 100% that is says like that (twirping in windows atm), but you get the picture. :) But if you don't want unstable packages you should leave it commented.
