Trying to use Gnome 2.2, but I can't live with Metacity. It's an 'okay' window manager, but it misses window 'bumping', you know, where windows 'bump' into each other ('resistance', 'magnetic') and also to the screen sides. That is one feature I can't live without. However, did I miss it somewhere? Is it in Metacity?

Also tried sawfish, but it doesn't feel right... I really want to give Gnome 2.2 an honest shot at becoming my desktop environment, but without a decent window manager, that's not gonna happen...

Maybe you have solutions? Or alternatives or..... ?

Do you know of a Window Manager that has the features you describe? If so, you can use that wm rather than MetaCity.

Try holding down shift key while dragging windows around..

Only thing I'm missing in metacity is the option to make window stay on top.

ebrostig: yeah, but the problem is that no window manager ever satisfies me enough :/ :) They all have features that others don't have and they all don't have features that others do have. :D

im using gnome2.2 with xfm4 (the window manager from xfce4) because i dont like the window-minimization-animation of metacity and because xfm4 has lots of nice themes.
The bumping-effect is present, but afaik only for the screen-edges.

Which was the Window-Manager which has bumping between windows you are refering to?
Was it the KDE-WindowManager?
If so, just kill Metacity and run kwin instead, you can use whatever WM you want.

That's not entirely true. I tried to use fluxbox in Gnome once, but it didn't work. It made the Gnome desktop into a window. Not all WM's are Gnome compatible.

You can use every WM with GNOME. OK, some WMs show the desktop in a window, but most people deacitvate their Deskop-Icons so this isn't a problem

After I emerged Gnome 2.0.3 I found MetaCity to be terrible. It was fairly fast and it worked but had almost no configuration options compared to Sawfish which is what I'm used to. Also fullscreen mplayer mesed up alot in Metacity.

To remedy this I simply unmerged Metacity and emerged sawfish 1.2 which is so far bug free except for the Dock Level bug which I fixed by changing 1 character in the source. Sawfish 1.2 does anti-aliased text in the title bars too.

To set Sawfish as my default WM I just edited my gnome session using the sessions tool.

I'm giving xfce4 a try now. Might use xfwm4 in Gnome, but so far I like xfce4 itself. It's very lightweight, but still has plenty of options. Thanks for the tip!

Believe it or not, but somehow Sawfish couldn't satisfy my needs either. Maybe it were the window decorations (couldn't find one that I was happy with. And yes, that is important ;) )...
