EDIT: See below for my latest log printouts!

The gentoo-wiki told me to add my drivers into the kernel as so:
Device Drivers -> Character devices -> <*> dev/agpart, <*> Intel 440LX [etc], then <M> Direct Rendering Manager, <M> Intel 830M, 845G, etc, and finally <M> i915 driver. I decided to just INSTALL all of these, using <*> instead of M.

Order of events now: I edited make.conf and put in VIDEO_CARDS="fglrx" This was an accident, I thought for some reason I had an ati card. After trying to do emerge xorg-X11 I was given a message saying it could not locate one called fglrx, but finished all the same. I reran it after editing the VIDEO_CARDS setting once again, and it was fine!
When running Xorg-configure, it breaks stating "caught signal 11, aborting"

Where should I go from here? I tried manually editing my xorg from another person with the SAME laptop, and when i entered the "i810" as Driver, it states it can't find it when I try startx.

I am a little lost.

Thanks so much in advance, I LOVE these forums for all the help I've gathered thus far!

try
X -configure
then if xorg fails to start for you post /var/log/xorg.0.log

sorry im not sure about that one, kinda looks like a driver issue maybe you could try to build it as a modules since you did say you went back in and built it into the kernel correct?

hang in there someone else will jump in to help.

OK, I added the specific video drivers as modules in the kernel and installed them. I also installed all of the usb stuff via emerge, as well as x86-mouse, and x86 keyboard. After running Xorg -configure again, here's what I have:

Any ideas?

Here's my Xorg.0.log, and posted below this is the xorg.conf.new that it generated:

mouse shouldn't be too difficult.
try /dev/psaux or /dev/input/mice i bet either will work.

from the console you can do

cat /dev/psaux

and move your mouse, If you see garbled output then you have the correct device.

~ # ls /dev/input
by-path event0 event1 mice mouse0

Thanks very much dcoats - that's exactly what I did and it is entering X correctly now, but it is still throwing this error at the bottom stating that it cannot locate the i915_xxxx.dri, and then switching to software rendering! Any ideas on that one?

Hi, I use two laptops that have the Intel 915GM chipset - here is my xorg.conf file:

Code:

Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier     "X.org Configured"
        Screen      0  "Screen0" 0 0
        InputDevice    "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
        InputDevice    "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection

Section "Files"

EndSection

Section "InputDevice"

EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier  "Mouse0"
        Driver      "mouse"
        Option      "Protocol" "auto"
        Option      "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
        Option      "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 6 7"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
        #DisplaySize      290   210     # mm
        Identifier   "Monitor0"
        VendorName   "AUO"
        ModelName    "7a41"
EndSection

                Depth     24
        EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "DRI"
        Mode    0666
EndSection

I used X -configure to generate this config, and I've found that the last line "Section 'DRI'" has helped me with the DRI issue.

EDIT - also, kernel config options (all builtin, no modules):
Character Devices -> AGP Support
Character Devices -> AGP Support -> Intel I8xx Support
Character Devices -> AGP Support -> Direct Rendering Manager -> Intel I830 (I915 Driver)

HTH,
W.

I had a similar problem with an on broad i815 card which was fixed by;

Adding the card to make.conf
Code:
VIDEO_CARDS="i810"

and re-emergeing mesa
Code:
# emerge -pv mesa

[ebuild U ] media-libs/mesa-6.5.1-r1 [6.4.2-r2] USE="motif nptl%* -debug -doc -hardened" VIDEO_CARDS="i810* -mach64 -mga -none -r128 -radeon -s3virge -savage -sis (-sunffb) -tdfx -trident -via" 0 kB
Code:
# emerge mesa

Hope this also fixes your problem (you may also need to emerge xorg-server again too).
