|
|
This is my first AMD system (to date I have used Intel only) and just want to clarify since (to me at least) there seems to be some inconstancy in advice and direction for installing Gentoo on an AMD64 based PC.
System specs
DFI Infinity nForce 4 Ultra
AMD64 X2 Dual Core 4400+
If I am going to install as if this is a regular 32 bit system I do the following
use the x86-minimal install CD
a x86 stage3
But here is where I seem to find some inconstancy, the cflags
should it be
cflag -march=athlon-xp
or
cflag -march=athlon64
The install guides and several forum posts show -march=athlon-xp for athlon64 installs that will be 32bit based.
After cruzing the forum, gentoo-wiki and the gcc docs my gut says athlon64 is now the correct setting, even if I would be doing everything in 32 bit.
Am I correct on this?
If I am going to do a 64 bit install I down load the
amd64-minimal install CD and the amd64 stage3
then set my cflag for march=athlon64
And lastly, the key part that denotes if your system is going to be 32bit or 64bit is the chost setting.
i686-pc-linux-gnu = 32bit
x86-64-pc-linux-gnu = 64bit
correct ?
other then my question about athlon-xp verse athlon64 for the cflag am I understanding the cflag and stages correctly?
and my final question, not cflag releated. When I compile my kernel, I choose athlon64 as my processor type regardless if the system is 32bit or 64bit?
Thanks in advance for helping to clarify this

Yeah, you've got it. As to the kernel, the processor options are different depending on the arch. On 64-bit, yes, you'll pick "AMD-Opteron/Athlon64"; on 32-bit, you'll use "Opteron/Athlon64/Hammer/K8". So it's still Athlon64, but on 32-bit, it's a much longer list to pick from, so your CPU is down a ways. _________________ Thomas S. Howard |
