I'm not able to build xfdesktop-4.5_pre20070325-r1..

It seems like something with thunar-vfs, but I have no clue what.
Anybody has a solution?

I've built it before (a few weeks ago) but downgraded, as the menus don't work nicely IMHO. My custom menu items disappeared, and the openoffice shortcuts wouldn't work.

Was this intentional?

2.10+ are latest stable for both glib and gtk+. the mixer ebuild declares >= 2.6 as requirements
for both gtk+ and glib, well below current stable versions.

Here's what I'm talking about:
Code:
 # ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge -uvpN xfce4

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild     U ] xfce-base/libxfce4util-4.4.1 [4.4.0-r1] USE="-debug -doc" 365 kB

The problem is I can't build the rest unless I manage to get passed xfdesktop..
Can I just emerge --skipfirst? Or is it a needed package?

Code:
echo ">=xfce-base/xfdesktop-4.5_pre20070325" >> /etc/portage/packages.mask

Then try emerging again. (alternatively, you can set it so that only versions less than the one above are keyworded). You won't be emerging the beta version of xfdesktop then.

Reverting to 4.4.0-r3 :roll:

Same problem with xfdesktop, but reverting to 4.4.0-r3 doesn't work :cry:

Are you using the menu-plugin, if so the problem could be as in this bug.

No I don't use any panel. And in fact the problem seems to rely on the option to display minimised applications on the desktop. When switched off (showing launchers or nothing), xfdesktop works well. Furthermore, xfdesktop segfaults only when I log in : I can launch it "by hand" and it works well.

Very strange... I'll have to dig into what was uptated yesterday when I made my weekly emerge -u world...

The tab for transparency in Window Manager Tweaks is suddenly gone after updating to 4.4.1 and then restarting X. I've confirmed that compsiting is enabled in X still and no changes were made to xorg.conf. Strange...

Solved: embarrassingly, I hadn't enabled xcomposite for xfwm4. I'd swear that when I did emerge xfce4 it was an option, but when emerging it individually, it showed up.

Well, I think 4.4.1 might have a space leak somewhere... recently, I've had a huge increase in the amount of memory being used, and it looks like xfdesktop & co. might be the culprits, so I'm going to downgrade back to 4.4 and see if that fixes it...

Argh... 4.4.0 -> 4.4.1: xfdesktop segfault; 4.4.1 -> 4.4.0: xfdesktop segfault; unmerge xfce4 & friends, emerge: xfdesktop segfault.

Well, I downgraded back to 4.4.0 for xfdesktop, and I'm definitely getting less intensive memory usage... so I guess there's a space leak in 4.4.1...

I used beryl with XFCE until I got blackscreen. This is caused by beryl-manager.

Now I decided to unmerge beryl. But I get no window decorator in XFCE, don't have any menu and background.

How can I solve this ? What are the configuration files to edit ?

Thanks for your help.

Try logging onto a terminal and start xfwm4, xfce4-panel and xfdesktop manually.

For example:
Code:
$ DISPLAY=:0.0 xfwm4 &

This should be fixed since 26 Apr 2007 by xfce-base/xfdesktop-4.4.1-r1.

If you remove ~/.cache from your home directory xfce4-session starts from beginning and should start xfwm4 again.

Plus, if you previously have used gtk-engines-qt with KDE you need to remove ~/.gtkrc* files too.

*shrug* 4.4.1 actually should *fix* some of the leaks, not add them.. 8O

Well, you'd think so...

I might try 4.4.1 in the next day or so just to double-check...

Try starting xfce4-panel and xfdesktop the same way you started xfwm4.

Hi there :)

I didn't have the time to read through this thread, but if xfce4-mixer fails to install & you have -fomit-frame-pointer in your cflags disable
it temporarily & you'll be fine with this problem

Regards

Hey guys.
After reading the latest comments I was a bit hesitant, but decided to try it anyway.
So I updated from 4.4.0 to 4.4.1 (included all applications including plugins etc)
I get no segfaults or weird problems and the fonts still look exactly the same.

And still a very lightweight memory usage. I don't think there are apparent memory leaks in there.

Thanks for the good work, coders & maintainers!
