I am about to attempt a Gentoo install on my new IBM TP T41p (2737-GEU). I am trying to follow the handbook as closely as possible, but I'm wondering if I have 2 gigs of ram if I really need a swap partition. Thanks for the help guys!

-Eric

EDIT: typo

In addition to virtual memory, linux can also use swap if you want to use tmpfs for /tmp (file system in memory, backed by swap) or suspend to disk (hibernate).

Well swap CAN be used for hibernate but Suspend2 comes with a file writer these days as well, so you don't necessarily need swap for that anymore and 2 gigs of Ram is a size that excedds the virtual memory of many machines.

I'd say you forget the swap and give filewriter a try.

previous discussions on this topic tend to conclude that a little swap is probably still a good idea (just search for swap space), but anything more than say 512mb would be overkill, unless you are using the swap for hibernate...
