|
|
I've bought the brand new APC Smart-UPS 750VA (SUA750I)
I've got both serial and USB cable to connect it to my computer. I'm going to use apcupsd to monitor/control the UPS - I had a really good experience with apcupsd with my old APC Back-UPS 500VA.
So, is there any difference in functionality/performance/reliability if I connect UPS via serial or USB cable?

not really, if you got a vacant serial port i say use that you can always use usb if you wish, either one is fine. |

There is a difference, sometimes. Some UPS models only provide "dumb signaling" mode over the serial port, even with an APC cable: no data on battery reserve, line voltage quality and all that good stuff, just simple state transitions (on battery, on A/C, shutting down, etc.). Performance and reliability aren't affected, only the monitoring functionality.
That's true of the Back-UPS line anyway, but the Smart-UPS units are ... smarter ... and might work 100% over the serial link. Try both and see. _________________ Plants are pithy, brooks tend to babble--I'm content to lie between them.
