I'm getting intermittent hang during bootup, where I have to power-cycle to recover. I've stepped through the interactive boot process and it seems to be related to the loading of the IPW3945 driver. The following messages are logged:

I'm running sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.19-r5 with the following wireless drivers installed

[I--] [ ] net-wireless/ipw3945-1.2.0 (0)
[I--] [ ] net-wireless/ipw3945-ucode-1.14.2 (0)
[I--] [ ] net-wireless/ipw3945d-1.7.22-r4 (0)

All of these modules were re-emerged after the kernel was built. The hang seems to be intermittent. Sometimes it will hang 2-3 times in a row, and then go several reboots without any problems. I don't typically use wireless, so my hardware kill switch is usually set to kill the RF signal during most boots.

Any suggestions? Am I asking about this in the right place?

Thanks
George

Ah, and I guess it's bad form to reply to my own post, but I forgot to include system information

2.6.19-gentoo-r5 #2 SMP Sat Feb 24 00:19:57 EST 2007 i686 Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2500 @ 2.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

It's a Dell Latitude D820, 2 Gig memory.

I opened a bug against the kernel and drivers and got the solution. Posting here in hope that it might help others.

There is an upstream bug - ipw3945 will loop if booted with the RF kill switch enabled (rf disabled).

http://www.bughost.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1096

This bug report has a two patches to the ipw3945-1.2.0 driver that seem to help somewhat. There is a typo in the patch, so it won't compile without a minor tweak. The line
ipw_released_restricted_access(priv);

should actually have the word "release", not "released".

Can someone e-mail these patches to me? My e-mail address is in my profile. I'm behind a Department of Defense firewall.
