Can somebody give a brief overview, including recommended
hardware (that works well with linux) and software, to get video
off of an ordinary video cassette and onto a DVD? Assume a
clueless newbie as far as working with video goes. :)

I can look up the details with a brief road map maybe just
something like:
1. Get the ABC device.
2. Use the DEF program to get the footage to the hard drive.
3. Use the GHI program to compress it.
4. Use the JKL program for extra processing (menu? titles?)
5. Use the MNO (cdrecord?) program to burn the DVD.

I just bought a DVD recorder (Staples has an 8x+/4x-
recorder for 50 USD after rebates), and know nothing
about using it. Thank you for your help.

1-How much you want to spend on a TV card (or videocard with TV in)? What quality?
2-I use Freevo
3-I use mencoder. But if you want to make a DVD (Mpeg2) I suggest you don't compress it.
4-DVDauthor i hear is good (don't use it myself) http://www.linuxjournal.com/article.php?sid=6953

Do I need a television card, or will one of those "boxes"
(with lots of inputs and outputs) work? Maybe a television
card offers better value, though.

I managed to get a surplus (WinTV) card, but it only has
coaxial input. The VCR has the (I think most common)
three cable (video, left audio, right audio) setup.

Can you give me a summary of features for the cards
at the most common price levels. I won't do anything
"professional" (as you can probably guess from my lack
of experience :) ), but I don't want to get something that
doesn't work well. Thanks again.

Well, most VCRs *do* have co-ax ins/outs, so you can easily merge them with your cable/antenna setup (at least, those were the "good old days").

The low-end cards usually have an audio-in, an audio-out (3.5mm jacks), co-ax in, composite in, and s-video in. You'd want a brooktree card, they're the cheapest at the moment. Examples are the AVermedia TV98 and anything you can find on the supported list at http://btwincap.sourceforge.net/ (yes, it's a windows driver. So sue me)

Here's what I currently use:
1. ASUS TV FM card (any Video4Linux-suppoted device should work)
2. gv4l. This is a frontend for transcode, and works very well for me. An ebuild is provided on their web site.
3. transcode. gv4l may be able to capture as mpeg2 directly, but I have not tried that yet.
4. dvdauthor and Varsha (a frontend to dvdauthor). There was no ebuild for Varsha the last time I checked, but it's just a single jar file, so you can download it to your home directory and run it from there.
5. growisofs, from dvd+rw-tools. I usually use something like this:
Code:
growisofs --dvd-compat -Z /dev/dvd -dvd-video /path/to/DVD

I hope that helps, and I can try and help with any questions you may have.

Oh, and I forgot one step: I use avidemux to trim the video (unwanted parts at the beginning and end).
