|

Hi,
My gnome desktop starts as mute every startup. I have to unmute and increase volumes of every channel individually every boot from the gnome alsa mixer. Is there a way to fix this and save volume settings?
Thanks,
Bahadir |

are you starting /etc/init.d/alsasound upon boot or in the default runlevel? That usually restores your previous mixer settings, as the hardware doesn't store volume levels across boots. _________________ Configuring a Firewall? Try my iptables configuration

Thanks, this helped me too! I got tired of readjusting my sound levels after every freaking reboot! |

Can you explain? How do I start /etc/init.d/alsasound upon boot or in the default runlevel? |

rc-update add alsasound boot
you should read the gentoo documentation you know (the system admin handbook and all that)
it contains things like this. |

Thanks. The gentoo documentation is very good. It's just that there is very much to learn, and so much of the obscure stuff I rarely use.
I do recall some stuff about rc-update now that you mention it, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't under a heading such as: "How to Add stuff during Boot".
Anyway, now that I used it to solve a problem, perhaps the next time I need to add something to boot, rc-update will pop out: "hmmm, something about rc-update, let me look that up again..."
Afterall, I don't do this for a living. You read something once and think, "ooh, that's kinda neat", then forget it months later when you need it. But if you use it solve a problem, I think it's easier to recall the next time. Um, I hope, maybe, we'll see... |

Ack, still have a problem.
This is what happened:
Code: | starbase / # rc-update add alsasound boot
* rc-update: '/etc/init.d/alsasound' not found; aborting |
Which is wierd, as I do have sound after I un-mute it with a mixer. I must have alsasound. What gives? |

What about folks who have ALSA compiled into the kernel? _________________ ~~0~~ |

For other folks who may read this,
you have to rc-update alsasound to boot, not default. Setting it to default didn't keep my mixer levels, but setting it to boot did. _________________ ~~0~~ |
