|
|
I am running a dual 200MHz Ultra 2.
Code: | Linux lowu 2.6.17-gentoo-r8 #1 SMP Mon Dec 25 00:00:42 GMT 2006 sparc64 sun4u TI UltraSparc I (SpitFire) GNU/Linux |
I have got X on this, and its running the latest gnome.
I know this doesnt necessarily guarantee anything, but I don't think there are problems with the hardware.
It can compile literally EVERYTHING I throw at it, it takes a very long time, granted, but everything works beautifully.
There is one notable and slightly worrying exception though:
glibc.
Code: |
crab@lowu /etc/portage $ more package.mask
>sys-libs/glibc-2.3.6-r4
|
Masking glibc as above allows me to do a full emerge -uDv world, and everything seems cool.
Any ideas what may be causing this?
Could I have a hardware problem so subtle that glibc locks the box, but other big compiles (gcc, the kernel, X, even evolution!) work fine? |

I'm on a dual 300MHz Ultra-2, with 2.6.17-r8, with 2GB of RAM but glibc 2.3.6-r5 compile and works just fine. I think you need to do a portage update and then emerge glibc 2.3.6-r5 *not* glibc 2.3.6-r4.
I'm even using it to cross compile big apps that would take ages to build on my old i586 and i686 boxes.
Hope this is of use. _________________ Cheers,

No, this is the problem.
I have already got r4 installed.
Any attempt to compile r5 kills the box dead.
Locks it up hard, can't ping it or do anything. |

Have you tried rebuilding the entire toolchain including binutils and gcc? _________________ Cheers,

What kernel are you using? On some U2 SMP systems (such as mine), some activities with kernel-2.6.xx series will do just what you are seeing. If this is the problem you are experiencing, then I would expect the lockup to occur at different places in the build process. |

Im using:
It does indeed seem to lock up in different places.
So I guess one "workaround" might be to build a non SMP kernel, hop into that to build glibc, and then reboot into the SMP one? |

Unfortunately this isn't a problem that's unique to SMP kernels on Ultra 2s but rather SBUS based sparc64 hosts (in UP or SMP kernel configurations). There's no known real cure for this problem at the moment, short of a 2.4 kernel.
However the problem is typically related to high disk I/O so if you don't normally do too much of that (other than package updates via portage), you should OK for the most part. |
