Is there a way for mplayer to understand special formating signs in like e.g. {y:i} in mDVD format?
Does any other player support them?

IIRC MPlayer doesn't support it due to limitations on the OSD system. Totem does seem to support it.

Nope. Totem displays {y:i} as text.

See whether you've compiled it with the gstreamer or xine backends. One of them does support it (i'm not with my computer so i can't tell which).

I have complied it with xine use flag. And it does not use formating signs.
It seems like it's either gstreamer or xine backend in totem b/c xine flag disables gstreamer.

Having removed xine, I now have totem using gstreamer and formating subtitles...
... but now Totem does not want to play DVDs.

So, we're back to my original issue.

Ok, that's an issue with gstreamer playing dvds (though i'm not sure what you're specific problem is). Do you have the DVD plugin for gstreamer installed (i'm guessing there is one)?

I have no idea
gstreamer has no USE flags.

Totem does have a "dvd" useflag, which i suppose you have enabled. When enabled, it installs the following packages:
Code:

media-plugins/gst-plugins-a52dec
media-plugins/gst-plugins-mpeg2dec
media-libs/gst-plugins-ugly
media-plugins/gst-plugins-dvdread

You can try emerging these (with --oneshot so they don't get into the world file) and see if it fixes your problem.

I have always had tottem compiled with dvd use flag a it had been refusing to play dvds until I added xine use flag.

As i said, try reemerging the packages i mentioned as they are related to dvd support. If that doesn't work, try emerging more recent versions for those packages.

Still, "not working" is vague, do you have any error messages displayed to the console or popups, what exactly doesn't work?

OK. I did that... and some more testing.
When I run Totem GUI and tell it to play DVD (from Film menu where it shows mounted DVDs) or right click on DVD icon and choose Play DVD I get error message saying there are no plugins for DVD format.

When I give totem /media/disk from console it plays OK.

Ok, i understand the error now. I think this bug is of interest to you.

Yes, thanks.
And this way (without xine backend) totem supports subtitle formating.
