What file do I edit in order to change Grub's boot parameters so that it waits for 5 seconds instead of 30 seconds for me to select a boot option?

Change the "timeout" value in /boot/grub/menu.lst.

for some reason i don't have any files in the boot dir. :?: they aren't hidden i don't think as there is no files or dir listed using ls -la either.

the system boots fine but i am confused.

You have to mount /boot first.

i just realised that but thanks for the help anyway. i'll have to wait to do that though as i just started the kde emerge process 8O

You can switch virtual terminals (Alt-Fx, where x is between 1 and 6) and run several commands simultaneously, if you like.

You don't need to wait... Just open a new terminal and do it...
