Hi
I installed gentoo linux, and after booting the system I got a weird message!
Code:

checking root filesystem...
fschk.ext3: no such file or directory while trying to open /dev/ROOT:
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or something else), then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with and alternate superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 <device>

I tried to run the fschk.ext3 on /dev/sda3(my root partion) and it gave me the following output:
Code:
/dev/sda3: clean, 2331414/1876800 files, 545092/375117 blocks

A friend of mine told me it could be a corrupt stage 3 tarball, but I used md5sum and it was ok... The other option is the kernel compilation. I had no idea of what I was doing, and I just selected the options on the handbook... I have an IDE disk (20GB) where I keep windows, and a SATA disk (300GB), where 15GB are for Linux and the rest is NTFS... During the kernel compilation I activated the NTFS support, but appart from that and some other things I can't remember, I followed the handbook... Was I supposed to turn on any other driver? I had no idea of what I was doing, and if that was the problem, where can I learn more about that so that I don't screw it up again the next time?
Thanks;)

post your partition structure.

Run

Code:
fdisk /dev/sda
and then press 'p'. Note down the partition structure.

Also print the contents of /boot/grub/grub.conf and /etc/fstab

You might not have setup /etc/fstab properly.

Ext3 support is present by default in the kernel and no specific package is required for this, so kernel would be able to read the filesystem.

Please, follow the instructions in the handbook and properly edit your fstab file to match your filesystem structure. /dev/ROOT is not a valid device, but a placeholder in that file where you need to insert your root device name.
