Hi,
Recently I enabled DRI on my 845G video and although things were going smoothly, my system would lock on a shutdown (exiting from X). Now, this happened a few times last week and today also when I was trying to figure out the issue. Now, as of 2 hours ago, I rebooted my system (after a lock up) and /etc/init.d/ntp-client could not get time and /etc/init.d/local start up would not complete. I can press Ctrl+Alt+Del to call a restart, i.e. it is not a lock up but I could not get to the login promt (I have xdm disabled for now).
So, on my next boot I used 'Interactive boot' by pressing i, and exiting directly to prompt. I ran the scripts manually and anything to do with network, didn't work: ntp-client, ssh, links, etc. I was getting an ip from dhcpcd. So, I thought maybe I messed up my kernal settings (the last thing I did before my lockup) so I changed it back and tried to recompile, and I could not get passed the

line, I can't remember exactly what it was. I can hit Ctrl+c, so its not a lockup. Right now I'm running of a livecd. So, I used the livecd to recompile my kernel successfully, and chroot'ed to
just in case. Also, I ran 'reiserfsck --fix-fixable /drive' and it reported no corruptions. Also, within my 'chroot'ed evn, I can't compile most things, or use the network (ping, links).
So, I have a fairly botched system and I really don't know where to start. Right now I'm backing up my system just in case I mess it more while trying to fix it. Thanks for your help in advance!

Well, that wasted about 3 hours of my life:
my /etc/hosts and /etc/nsswitch.conf files got corrupt, thus was not able to resolve any hosts, hiyo! |
