Hi,
I've had this problem for a couple of months, it must have just slipped through in an upgrade. When I run glxgears I only get fps of 125 whereas before I got over 400. This makes a big difference even if glxgears aren't actually that accurate.

I get the following from fglrxinfo;
Hawaiian ja # /opt/ati/bin/fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: MOBILITY RADEON 9700 Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6234 (8.32.5)

I get no errors in my Xorg.0.log (displayed at the bottom), but I do get the following in dmesg
[fglrx] Internal AGP support requested, but kernel AGP support active.
[fglrx] Have to use kernel AGP support to avoid conflicts.
[fglrx] AGP detected, AgpState = 0x1f000217 (hardware caps of chipset)

My /etc/make.conf is set as
VIDEO_CARDS="radeon fglrx vesa fbdev"
although I'm not sure why I want radeon in there, I don't want to use the free drivers.

I've tried re-emerging xorg-x11-7.1 but it doesn't seem to emerge. I've been told it's some kind of metapackage, but how do I actually try and make it re-emerge xorg so any errors can be fixed?

I've tried using the 8.27.10-r1, ~8.28.8 and ~8.32.5 ati-drivers but nothing seems to help.

The modules I have loaded are;

I've tried using aticonfig on the xorg.basic (copied as xorg.conf) provided using
/opt/ati/bin/aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf --resolution=1400x1050
but I get the following errors
Uninitialised file found, configuring.
generate load 'dri' module
generate load 'glx' module
Error: Section # expected
/opt/ati/bin/aticonfig: parsing the command-line failed.

I'm sorry, but I've run out of ideas on this one, it's probably something simple but I can't work out what it is? I've included my xorg.conf at the bottom of the screen.

Thanks

[fglrx] AGP detected, AgpState = 0x1f000217 (hardware caps of chipset)

The modules I have loaded are;
Hawaiian ja # lsmod
fglrx 509392 9
ati_agp 6220 0
intel_agp 17692 1
agpgart 25096 3 fglrx,ati_agp,intel_agp
try running 'rmmod fglrx ati_agp intel_agp agpgart;modprobe fglrx' and see if that helps you. If it loads intel_agp again, or if that fixes the problem, disable support for intel AGP in the kernel.

It says that your are using the internal AGP module for the kernel, which you dont want. Make sure to build the agp_gart as a module in the kernel.

Hi, Thanks for the replies, but I can't make any progress , my kernel has agpgart and the other agp modules compiled as a kernel. If I try to leave agpgart out of /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6, it gets loaded anyway, possibly a hotplug issue? I might try moving the file elsewhere, so it can't get it's hands on it.

│ │<M> /dev/agpgart (AGP Support) │ │
│ │< > ALI chipset support │ │
│ │<M> ATI chipset support │ │
│ │< > AMD Irongate, 761, and 762 chipset support │ │
│ │< > AMD Opteron/Athlon64 on-CPU GART support │ │
│ │<M> Intel 440LX/BX/GX, I8xx and E7x05 chipset support

If I try and run
Hawaiian linux # rmmod fglrx ati_agp intel_agp agpgart
ERROR: Module fglrx is in use
ERROR: Module ati_agp does not exist in /proc/modules
ERROR: Module intel_agp is in use
ERROR: Module agpgart is in use by fglrx,intel_agp

Does it matter in which order the modules are loaded?

Thanks again

Try just using just:

Code:

<M> /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)
│ │< > ALI chipset support
│ │< > ATI chipset support
│ │< > AMD Irongate, 761, and 762 chipset support
│ │< > AMD Opteron/Athlon64 on-CPU GART support

Code:

Ok, I've tried that and it didn't work. I've tried downgrading to xorg 7.0-r1 using /etc/portage/package.keywords and emerge -uND xorg-x11

Does anyone know what order the modules should be loaded in (agpgart, intel-agp, ati-agp, fglrx, in that order I think)

As it was working before xorg 7.1 appeared, is there a deep remove, which would get rid of all of modular X so I can make sure I've reinstalled the older version? It's either that or a problem with the drivers themselves.

¿Have you deleted your AGP modules before install new kernel modules? If you haven't done this, the old modules can be loaded before ati's ones.

Apologies for the delays, I am paying attention but I've been travelling a fair bit.

Modules to do with the kernel are
agpgart
intel-agp
ati-agp

and their dates all match the last kernel compile.

Modules installed by ati-drivers
fglrx

and it's date matches the emerge ati-drivers date.

I've recently generated a new xorg file using ati config. Still no joy.
Downgraded to the latest version of ati-drivers. Still not working.
Using the same modules as when it was working before.

I'm wondering about the order in which the modules are loaded?
From the bottom to the top of the lsmod command I get, with a few lines excluded,
fglrx 384236 8
ati_agp 6220 0
intel_agp 17692 1
agpgart 25096 3 fglrx,ati_agp,intel_agp

Which looks about right as I think ati-agp is irrelevant anyway. The relevant sections of my /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 looks like
#agpgart
ati-agp
intel-agp
fglrx
and is right at the top. I presume hotplug is loading the agpgart module.

I'm coming to the conclusion that the problem is with X 7.1. I want to completely remove this and install the 7.0 version but have no idea how. Any ideas?

I think you are missing what people are trying to tell you. You don't want the kernel modules to load. The ati-drivers have their own AGP support built directly into the drivers. When you have something like intel_agp or ati_agp loaded then the video drivers have to use those modules instead of their own implementation. Your best bet is to first remove all the agp type modules you have in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6. Then reboot your system and see what modules get loaded. When you run the lsmod command you should hopefully only see agpgart and fglrx. If you don't then something is causing those extra modules, intel_agp or ati_agp, to be loaded. You will need to find out what is doing that.

Your next step would be to recompile your kernel and remove both the Intel AGP and ATI AGP support. That way they can't be loaded. The ati-drives only need basic AGP support built. They only need chipset specific AGP support if there is some kind of compatibility issue with the motherboard you have.

Hope that clears things up.

I gave this a go a couple of posts ago to no avail. It also doesn't explain why the drivers were working fine a couple of months ago with this kernel configuration.

I will try and repeat this now.

Complete failure; the system dropped back down to MESA in fglrxinfo from the ATI drivers.

I'm using a 2.6.15-suspend2 kernel, and am starting to wonder if a kernel upgrade is required?

Apart from that, does anyone know how to downgrade X?

try using a newer kernel. i just got fgrlx working myself tonight using (i believe) 2.6.18-gentoo-r-something.

as for downgrading x, you can always use the = operator on the ebuild to specify version. (you may have to grab an ebuild from cvs and put it in overlay depending on if the package still is in the tree or not)

cheers

You can't simply use the = in the /etc/portage/package.keywords as the package is virtual and loads a lot of other packages. I've tried that.

I think I'll try updating the kernel as you said.

yes you can quite easily, and it wouldn't go in package.keywords either. It would go in package mask. Then you would want to do one of these two:

Code:

emerge -uDNpv world
emerge -uDNpv xorg-x11

I finally doubled my framerate, still 140fps below what I had previously. Turns out I need to upgrade the kernel from a 2.6.15 suspend2 to to 2.6.18 version. the reduction could be due to the fact I've changed my xorg.conf. Thanks for all your help.
