|

well my problem is this
I learned how to work with sql databases in school where we used m$sql servers and I'm fine with those (most of the time)
know Ive reached a point where mySQL just doesn't really cut it anymore... I need the diagrams, role managers bulk etc...
not that Id dislike phpmyadmin but setting up relations could still be easier.
I have a gentoo desktop system with a vm-windowsxp machine on it that runs m$SQL.
the 2 are connected over a private network because I actually don't want windows to access the internet:)
well I didn't find any free unixodbc driver for m$sql (ist that just me?)
So I was asking myself "should I just simply change the server??"
I was actually thinking about oracle10 and tora. my question is this
can I just install It for free? (my system has 2 cores and I remember hearing something about a core-restriction)
and will I get a functional free version that is not 99% crippled?
you'd help me a lot (Im having a serious headache else I'd do some research myself, but I need 2 have a db-server running tommorrow so I ask you guys)
you'd help me a lot:) thx |

I've done away with the MSSQL and Oracle monstrosities. Granted, I *can* (barely) live without all the enterprisey stuff, but PostgreSQL + contribs have been perfectly adequate for the job (and SQLite for quick and dirty stuff - yes, I abhor MySQL ). _________________ Military Commissions Act of 2006: http://tinyurl.com/jrcto

You can install a development version of oracle for personal and educational usage. My school has a dual proc dell server dishing up oracle and htmldb for the students (Running gentoo of course ).
I like oracle, but it really likes system resources. Dont be surprised when the installer slaughters your system for several hours.
I have issues with MSSQL cutting out at work and am tempted to lay down a plan to migrate over to MySQL once we migrate our software over to a new version (Mapguide 6.5 right now). The new opensource version seems to run quite well with apache and mysql.
MSSQL works ok, but once you put a heavy load on it the mapguide site becomes unusable and crashes IE, lame. _________________ My Systems - "I suggest the whole thing be coded in whitespace. Henceforth the code will be obscure and functional at the same time." |
