I'm trying to install gentoo by using vmware on WinXP.
when i finished install and then reboot my machine.
system cannot mount /dev/sda...
i think it requires mkinitrd.
but i couldn't find them.
What should i carry out for getting mkinitrd?
Thanks. |

Gentoo doesn't use initrd. Most likely, you didn't include Buslogic SCSI controller support in your kernel, so Gentoo can't see your virtual disks. |

Oh, to get back into Gentoo so you can fix it (thought you might want to know), boot up your Gentoo install disk and do the following:
Code: | # mkdir /mnt/gentoo
# mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/gentoo (or whatever your root partition is)
# mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/gentoo/boot (or whatever your boot partition is)
# mount --bind /proc /mnt/gentoo/proc
# chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
# source /etc/profile |
You will now be inside your Gentoo installation, where you can go back and recompile your kernel with the proper drivers compiled in (looks like [*]) instead of as modules (looks like [M]) or not at all (looks like [ ]). |

Thank you for your answer.
but,,,
once i finished the installation.
even if it is going to boot from CD once again, it cannot do.
The repetition challenge was carried out and it was useless again.
Then, it reinstalls from the start each time.
I already think that it is doing 20 times.
Anyhow, install from the beginning once again.
Since I like gentoo.
thanks.[/b] |

The install CD also works as a rescue CD, so if you can get it to boot off of it, the commands above will bring you to a place where you can fix what's wrong without re-installing everything. |

yes, i did it.
It was able to mount safely and was able to start.
but,,,
Once it installs,
It still cannot perform booting from CD any longer too.
anyway,
Now, the Gentoo life can be enjoyed.
thanks a lot. |

To boot from the CD after you have installed Gentoo you need to your cdrom the first boot device in the vmware bios. On virtual boot hit F2 to get to the vmware bios then to the "Boot" menu. Move the cdrom on top of the HD and you will boot from the cd if it is in the drive.
Hope this helps |
