|
|
hey there. i'm a quasi-newbie- i've been dealing with linux for two years now but it's mostly been the newbie-friendly ones- debian, SuSE, etc.
i've been wondering this for some time-
can i start an SSH session and, say, start a compile or emerge something, and then disconnect from said SSH session and then later return to the same SSH session to check on the progress?
(i'd be connecting via PuTTY from work, not from another linux box)
i think i remember something about "attaching a session" but i'm a little clueless as to how/what this means, and all the documentation i seem to find by googling doesn't really address it.

Yes, you need a program called GNU Screen. Just 'emerge screen' and then check out the manpage. |

Hey JohnnyBubonic, I just started to delve into screen myself today. For what you are looking for you can check out this little how-to I just found.
Basically you need to start screen, then detach your session. You can then disconnect, and reconnect later. Very cool. Now only if I could get my multi-user screen session working properly..... *sigh* _________________ Thanks,
