Is anyone else having issues emerging libsdl-1.2.11? I'm installing gnome for the first time (somewhat new to this), and have managed to get this far, but now portage cannot connect to www.libsdl.org to download the tar.gz. I tried going to the libsdl.org website from another computer, and get timeout errors. Do I need to try this with an overlay, or something? I just want to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong on my end. :?

Forgive me if this has already been brought up. I did a quick search for "libsdl" and found no other topics addressing this.

I also get a timeout when trying to fetch libsdl...let's just hope they get their
server up and running soon.

No luck there -- they've been down all day. Isn't there a mirror site? We have a single point of failure here. I'm in the middle of my gcc 3.4.6 -> 4.1.1 upgrade and am dead in the water.

Thanks guys, I'm glad it's not just me at least. Hopefully the site will be back up tomorrow.

mark_alec, thanks man!! Works like a charm. Gnome installation is now chugging along (just 118 packages to go  ).

Hey, sorry if I'm being an idiot here, but I could use a little help: I took the URL and edited the ebuild file to point at the mirror listed above. It downloads the package just fine, but when it comes to compiling it, I get this error:

!!! Digest verification failed:
!!! /usr/portage/media-libs/libsdl/libsdl-1.2.11.ebuild
!!! Reason: Filesize does not match recorded size
!!! Got: 4754
!!! Expected: 4750

I know I probably shouldn't edit the ebuilds, is there a better way to do that? Thanks,

DFO

You don't need to have edited the ebuild, just `cd /usr/portage/distfiles && wget <file>`, then libsdl will emerge. As you did edit the ebuild, you need to run `ebuild /usr/portage/media-libs/libsdl-1.2.11.ebuild digest`, then it should work.

Thanks a lot for the download, today the server is again/still not reachable or incredibly slow and preventing me from finishing my kde install. It seems that there is no proper solution yet.

mark_alec, thanks man. Had the same problem here for 3 days now. You saved me. Hope there will be alternate download sites for the package. That's why alternative sites exist =P but not for this package.. lol.

This site has been finicky for a month now, thanks for the link. I was able to finally get a copy of the library but I guess just because the browser was a bit more patient than portage, it a bummer there is no mirror site for libsdl, probably would have made this invisible

Thanks again, I can always count on Gentoo forums for a fix to anything

Thanks for the file, but I'm getting a strange problem. Even though I put the file into the /usr/portage/distfiles directory, it still trys to download the file. I've checked the spelling and location of the file about 20 times but I'm absolutely sure that it is exactly the same name as what its trying to download and in the right directory. This has never happened to me before, but its been a while since I've used gentoo. Is there anything else I have to do to make it recognise that the file is already there? I've tried rebooting, emerge --metadata, not that I thought this should have any effect. The version of portage I'm using is 2.1.1-r2

Could somebody please verify that the md5sum of the file is: 185ecd0cd3463852671312f9884b090e

OK, I tried following mark's advice and doing the ebuild ... digest. That seems to have helped because at least now it recognises that the file is already on my system, but now when trying emerge libsdl it can't properly unpack the file saying:

tar: unexpected EOF in archive

I have tried re-downloading the file. Same md5sum, same error.

Any other ideas?

PostPosted: Fri Jan 19, 2007 12:43 pm    Post subject: My Checksum Reply with quote

My checksum of the file is:

418b42956b7cd103bfab1b9077ccc149 SDL-1.2.11.tar.gz

(I hope I did that right, I just did md5sum filename, let me know if I didn't)

seems strange that you would have got a bad download twice with the same checksum, if you were using ftp I would say that you were in text mode or something but this was a http link,,,, strange indeed,

Thanks rsborn. It does seem like I'm getting the wrong file somehow. I'm using wget. I'll try a different download method.

PostPosted: Fri Jan 19, 2007 2:31 pm    Post subject: now you need to redo the digest regeneration Reply with quote

Since you updated the digest, it may now be looking for the checksum of the bad file, now that you have the good file either emerge --sync or regenerate the digest again so it will look for the correct file again.

Not a real expert on manifests or digest but I think this will fix it for you

I tried doing an emerge --sync, ebuild digest then emerge libsdl and again it tried to download the file. I went into my distfile directory and the file was gone! Would ebuild digest have done that? Anyway I then downloaded the file again, confirmed md5sum then immediately did an emerge libsdl and it WORKED. I still don't know why the file got deleted but it seems happy now. Thanks again Rick for the md5sum, that was a big help in narrowing the problem down.
