please provide decent information about problem.

questions.
what do these commands show ?

# cat /proc/asound/cards
# /etc/init.d/alsasound status
# rc-update show | grep alsa

also if you have any logs ( you should) related to the problem; post them.

are you using alsa driver from the kernel or the emerged alsa drivers?
and do you have any specific reason why you want to use the drivers as (m) modules?

I was following this wiki

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ALSA_Complete_%28includes_dmix%29

My sound was working until i ran the following command:

rc-update add alsasound boot

/etc/init.d/alsasound start

then i got an error message from the volume control on my toolbar
saying sound has quit.

perhaps it would be a good a idea for you to read this whole topic carefully and in detail
after that we can continue solving the problem :)
... unless of course you are no longer interested.

did you read http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml ?
especially the section "Issues" under "3 Configuring/Testing ALSA"?
looks to me you emerged alsa-driver before, but then switched to the alsa-drivers that ship with the kernel source and you didn't delete the old modules.... (-> /lib/modules/2.6.18-gentoo-r3/alsa-driver/... )

Yes, that seems feasable.

So, if i read you properly, your sound stopped working in the game, then you attempted to reinstall it (generally not a good solution; it tends to take a long time and leave you staring at the same problem). For your problam in the game, you may install
Quote:
dan@pascal ~ $ emerge -pv gstreamer

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild N ] media-libs/gstreamer-0.10.8 1,640 kB

Total size of downloads: 1,640 kB

i know nothing about it, but it looks like that may be need and missing.

my thoughts on your broken sound:

Your problem, my friend, is that your sound thinks its supposed to load some modules, but it looks like those modules are out of sync with the kernel (??) . Or, you don't need the modules at all, and your init scripts for alsa are out of sync (!!)

(!!) Syncing alsa
This seems like a logical source of your problem. So lets try it first:
Code:
# emerge -av alsautils;  #  emerge the utilities that go along with alsa

In case you wonder what's going on:
You will be doing this at the command line and your shell will be bash. Therefore the first # in the preceeding code block stands for the root command prompt (you'll need to be root) The command is emerge -av alsautils and the ; is optional. the second # tells bash that the rest of the line is a comment and ought be ignored.

(??) building modules
Code:
# cd /usr/src/linux;  #that is your kernel source directory
# make modules modules_install; #that will rebuild the modules in /lib/modules/<your-kernel>

then see if all works.

if that doesn't work we'll just have to try something else.

I asked 2 questions and you ignored the second. so i assume that you have no idea why you want alsa as modules.
There are a couple reasons why to use them as mods but since you dont know why; i will suggest for you to compile the sound in a different way.

To give you the list of functional audio cards
# cat /proc/asound/cards

Confirm by doing # lspci or # lspci | grep audio and check if you have the audio there.

# lsmod will show you all alsa loaded modules.
Remove them ALL by doing # rmmod <module name>

Make sure that you are not loading any alsamodules from:
# nano /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

if there are any in there; remove them.

Double check if you have any alsa support emerged by doing
# emerge -s alsa

Whatever shows up there as installed (if you have any) you will remove by doing # emerge -C <package name>

make sure all sound is stoped
#/etc/init.d/alsasound zap

remove it from autostart for now.
# rc-update del alsasound boot

Run # modules-update and then # lsmod just to make sure that none is loaded

Now lets edit the kernel.
# cd /usr/src/linux ; make clean ; make menuconfig

go to alsa section and change ALL (m) selections to (*)
(make sure that you have all its needed for yoru audio card)
save the kernel & get out. and after run:
# make ; make modules_install

after the kernel is all compiled its time to copy it to "boot"

If you have a /boot partition, mount it frist.
# mount /boot
Now follow the gentoo handbook and copy the kernel to 'boot'.
(use your kernel version)

Once that is done REBOOT the box.
After that login as root and:
#emerge alsa-lib alsa-jack alsa-firmware alsa-headers alsa-utils

start alsa # /etc/init.d/alsasound start
add it to auto start # rc-update add alsasound boot

run from a terminal
$ alsamixer

if you didnt mess up, this will work. but if it fails... scroll up, read it again SLOWLY and do it again.

EDITED: i guess i was writing this while you solved it. i will leave it here anyway. might help others.

I'm working through the same problem. Where's the ebuild "alsa-jack'?

Since version 1.0.12_rc1, so also for 1.0.12 final whenever it will be released, there won’t be alsa-jack anymore, and alsa-plugins will, by all means, replace it. The change is not retroactive, 1.0.10 still have only alsa-jack, and 1.0.11 have both. The change will be definitive when 1.0.12 will be marked stable on all arches (will take a bit, I hope, as I want it to be tested completely).
