deZZA: i'm guessing that it's the same issue, but i'm not sure. i have an nvidia ti4600 chipset on my vid card, if that makes a difference.

also, the liveCD had bootsplash, so i know it isn't a hardware problem. just something wonky with the kernel. running 'splash -s -f /path/to/bootsplash.cfg > /boot/initrd worked fine, so i'm not sure what went wrong. i still get smaller fonts, so i know it's doing some kind of framebuffer action.

ideas?

Why would you run it again? If you're only upgrading?

I'm using ti4200 .. But i'm not sure that's the problem .. Probally some tricky thing with the kernel .. But the 2.6.x kernels usually have some tricky problems with the latest stable ones .. I use 2.6.7 untill i find a solution ..

i kept re-compiling the kernel, trying different options, so i ran splash just to be safe.

at any rate: i couldn't even get it working on 2.6.7: that kernel wouldn't even give me small fonts, and 'make menuconfig' wouldn't let me enter the submenu for bootup logos at all.

wonder how you got it working...

Hello, Im trying to get bootsplash working with RadeonFB (I'm using directFB, so vesafb is out of the question).

No matter what I do, when I try to load a bootsplash I get "error while decompressing image: depth mismatch (15)" in dmesg. Framebuffer is running at 1400x1050. The Image is also 1400x1050.

Ive tried both 96x96 pix/inch and 72x72pix/inch, nothing is working...

Also, I cant find any sort of documentation on RadeonFB... why?

help? :(

I just upgraded to 2.6.8-gentoo-r3, and I can't get bootplash to work :( I can get the Vesa driver to work, and get the fonts all small and everything, but bootsplash won't work. I've double checked all the kernel options, so it's not that, and it worked on my 2.4.25 kernel without problems, so it's not hardware. Any help?

I am hoping that someone can assist me to get the framebuffer working in a usefull manner. I have compiled the kernel successfully and can get the framebuffer working at low resolutions.
I think that the problems stem from my monitor not reporting its capabilities. I have tried to specify them on the grub menu. However this seems to have no success. Relevent notes from logs are included.

If I remember right, you have to specify the refresh rate on your grub line. (I'm no expert on this, in fact, I'm having much trouble with it myself :P). Try replacing
Code:
video=vesafb:1280x1024-32,ywrap,mtrr,noedid,nocrtc,maxhf:84,maxvf:160,maxclk:400

with
Code:
video=vesafb:1280x1024-32@75,ywrap,mtrr,noedid,nocrtc,maxhf:84,maxvf:160,maxclk:400

(The @75 is the change, right after 1280x1024-32)

I get the kernel outut :-

However if i replace the "vesafb:1027x768-16@65" with "vesafb:800x600-32" it works (just at a reduced resolution).

Can anyone offer assistance.

Is there a way to get bootsplash to be in verbose mode AND display a progress bar? :| (kernel 2.6.8.1)

Looking for support making this work on a 3dfx Voodoo3. I haven't yet got around to making any GUI's work yet; that was going to be the next project once I had FB booting properly.

Please see the help request and problem details HERE.

Thanks!

Here's what I did to make the error go away. (Dell Inspiron 8200, nvidia geforce2 go)
Use this in your grub.conf (with appropriate kernel info):
Code:
kernel (hd0,2)/kernel-2.6.7-love7 root=/dev/hda6 video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,vram:32,800x600-16@60

once I started explicitly listing my resolution information and omitting the vga option, everything worked! I hope this helps someone.

This works for me as well. Thanks for the tip :-D

Hello all.

Kernel: 2.6.8-r3

I try to get bootsplash screen according to The Gentoo Framebuffer, Bootsplash & Grubsplash How-To. Now I have no /proc/splash file. My bootsplash doesn't work. I have black screen when I boot system (there is only small cursor on the top left corner). After I press ENTER default choice of grub.conf starts and screen reports: "You passed an undefined mode number". I can chose video mode, but I havent got bootsplash.

/boot/grub/grub.conf:
Code:

timeout 30

default 0

# Nice, fat splash-image
splashimage=(hd0,1)/boot/grub/splash.xmp.gz

title=Gentoo Linux kernel-2.6.8-gentoo-r3

kernel (hd0,1)/boot/bzImage root=/dev/hda2 video=vesafb:1024x768 vga=0x317
initrd (hd0,1)/boot/initrd-1024x768

dmesg | grep vesa:
Code:

Kernel command line: root=/dev/hda2 video=vesafb:1024x768 vga=0x317
vesafb: NVidia Corporation, NV17 () Board, Chip Rev A2 (OEM: NVidia)

vesafb: scrolling: redraw
vesafb: framebuffer at 0xdc000000, mapped to 0xe0807000, size 16384k

I try to add @60 @72 @85 to video kernel parameter but it didn't help. I have LCD on laptop where 1024x768 is maximum resolution. If I cut vga parameter system doesn't raport any "errors", but I havent got bootsplash neither.

How can I make bootsplash works? Please give me some advice.

Add: problem is solved.

Hello,

I just setup a new Gentoo box using the gento-dev-sources which is Kernel 2.6.8-r3 as of today.

I did the bootsplash_patch

and did this in grub:

title=Gentoo
root (hd0,0)
kernel /bzImage root=/dev/hda1 video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr vga=0x31a
initrd /initrd-1280x1024

I get a highres console but not bitmap in the background
I don't have /proc/splash but a /proc/fbsplash which tells me:

Bootsplash v0.9 mode: verbose

whatever that mean.

I tried:
initrd=/initrd-1280x1024
then
initrd=/boot/initrd-1280x1024

BTW I don't see this in my menuconfig:

Bootsplash configuration --->
[*] Bootup splash screen

But something like:

Support for boot splash screen

or something like that which I set.. Did I forget to configure something in my config? Or is it the new gentoo-dev-sources menuconfig

still no bitmap. I'm stumped. Please help!

That's easy:
Code:
rc-update -d bootsplash default

Or you could just personalize the wallpaper. :)

Hello, All:

I'm using linux-2.4.26-gentoo-r9 and bootsplash-0.6.1-r4 on a Dell Latitude CPx (w/ ATI Rage Mobility video chipset) and have almost gotten framebuffer working perfectly. :)

I followed the directions as closely as possible but am still having a few problems:

    During startup the bootup logo is displayed but the initrd image is not even though I...
      explicitly enabled the "Framebuffer support -> Use splash screen instead of boot logo" option,
      created the initrd by following Step 6, and
      added
      Code:
      video=vesa:ywrap,mtrr vga=0x317 initrd=/boot/initrd-1024x768

      ...to the kernel line in grub.conf.

    Once the system has completed startup, I'm not able to create 'personal' themes even after...
      creating and populating the /etc/bootsplash/personal/ subdirectory,
      editing the /etc/bootsplash/personal/configs/bootsplash-*.cfg files,
      placing the images in the /etc/bootsplash/personal/images/bootsplash-*jpg, and
      editing /etc/conf.d/bootsplash and changing the value of BOOTSPLASH_THEME to "personal"

    The TTY is becoming corrupted. (i.e., The lower lines disappear until I change TTY's. When I return to the corrupted TTY the invisible lines are visible again!)

What do I need to do to get framebuffer working fully?
    I've noticed a lot of posts recommend using the "video=vesa:XXXxYYY-DD@RR" notation instead of 'vga=0x###" I used. Could that be the prolem?
    Should I compile support for the ATI Rage128 into the kernel? i.e., Console Drivers -> Framebuffer Support -> ATI Rage128.
    Should I compile support for AGP art into the kernel? i.e., Character Devices -> /dev/agpart

The bootsplash.org themeing page states:
Quote:
If you change the bootsplash picture configuration, you need to call mk_initrd to notify the kernel about your changes.

Are the results any different than the bootsplash command specified in the The Gentoo Framebuffer, Bootsplash & Grubsplash How-To?
Code:
/sbin/splash -s -f /etc/bootsplash/default/config/bootsplash-1280x1024.cfg >> /boot/initrd-1280x1024

I haven't had any luck with this format. I've been skimming through previous posts and it seems like the "-DD@RR" portion only applicable for vesafb and vesa should only use "XXXxYYY". i.e., Is the "-DD@RR" portion only applicable 2.6.x kernels?

From /usr/src/linux/fb/framebuffer.txt:
Quote:
To specify a video mode at bootup, use the following boot options:
video=<driver>:<xres>x<yres>[-<bpp>][@refresh]

From /usr/src/linux/fb/aty128fb.txt:
Quote:
You can pass kernel command line options to vesafb with
`video=aty128fb:option1,option2:value2,option3' (multiple options should
be separated by comma, values are separated from options by `:').
Accepted options:

noaccel - do not use acceleration engine. It is default.
accel - use acceleration engine. Not finished.
vmode:x - chooses PowerMacintosh video mode <x>. Depreciated.
cmode:x - chooses PowerMacintosh colour mode <x>. Depreciated.
<XxX@X> - selects startup videomode. See modedb.txt for detailed explanation. Default is 640x480x8bpp.

i haven't verified the <XxX@X> notation using aty128fb (I still use the vga=0x317) but video=aty128fb seems to work well for my Dell Latitude (even though I still don't get a splash screen during startup). :D
