Simple emerge improvement

I have a (seemingly) simple improvement idea for emerge. Why aren't the downloads made in parallel with the compilation process? I assume it wouldn't be very difficult to do, and it has the potential to improve emerge speed quite a bit, especially for slower connections. What do you think?
