Hello Guys,

At the moment i am not able to start my Xserver. I decided that I would update my laptop and tried emerge worold
It told me it needed to download 235 packages, there were a few blocked ones but i emerge -C'd them and then reinstalled them

I was half way through the compile and had to reboot to get some files off of my other parition for my boss, when i rebooted the machine all i get now is a text login and the following error message when i try and startx

Code: Select all

xauth: creating new authority file /home/wardlec/.serverauth.8118

X Window System Version 7.1.1
Release Date: 12 May 2006
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.1.1
Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.17-gentoo-r8 x86_64
Current Operating System: Linux snaggletooth 2.6.17-gentoo-r8 #8 SMP Wed Sep 27 09:23:33 GMT 2006 x86_64
Build Date: 15 September 2006
        Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org

    xkb_geometry             { include "pc(pc102)" };
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
> Error: Can't find file "en" for symbols include
> Exiting
> Abandoning symbols file "default"
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server

waiting for X server to shut down .FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/misc" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.
.

Couldnt get a file descriptor referring to the console

Any help here would be much appreicated as i use my laptop for work and all my development stuff is stored there.

Thanks in advance

I would resume re-compiling. You probally broke your xorg from restarting in the middle of the compile (you dont take a car out of the middle of the assembly line and expect it to turn on when you turn the key). You might have to stay out of X untill you are finished compiling, or at least compiling xorg. I would resume with "emerge -avuD world"
"WARNING: you may LOL"

This is my font size, color, and signature. It will change to whatever I pick. How cool is that?

OK I have just finished the compile and am getting exactly the same errors, I can confirm that i have got the latest Nvidia drivers installed as when i get the nvidia splash screen its now a grey background.

What happends in when i login as root, as it goes to the command prompt, i type startx and then the display flashes and thens i see the Nvidia logo pop up then it exits back to the command line with the above error message.

I really would appreciate some help here as I need my laptop for work tomorrow. :)

Thanks Guys

Hi. Don't know exactly what is the problem, but it doesn't seem to be an issue with the nvidia driver. I believe the file /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/en is missing on your system. I'd try emerging xkeyboard-config. If that doesn't help try generating a clean xorg.conf with xorgconfig. Be sure to make a backup of the old one config before you try the new one. If that fails too, please post your xorg.conf (without comments) and the output of /var/log/Xorg.0.log here.

EDIT: Well, I'm wrong with /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/en, that file is missing on my system too. Hmmm...
