I have an anal question about the output that I am seeing when my laptop boots up. I have a Dell Inspiron 5000e, with a USB mouse hooked up via a 4 port USB hub.

When my computer boots and the boot sequence gets to the part where the scripts are run (after the dmesg output section), I see a number of messages that read

Code:
Starting USB and PCI hotplugging.....
pcilib:cannot open /proc/bus/pci/02/00.0
pcilib:cannot open /proc/bus/pci/02/00.1
/etc/hotplug/pci.agent:  line 167: [: =: unary operator expected

The pcilib and /etc/hotplug lines repeat themselves a couple dozen times or so, then the bootup sequence finishes. I do get an "ok" after the repeated lines.

My computer runs fine. I just would like to know what these messages are, and if there is anything I can do to make them go away.

As far as I know hotplug pci enables you to remove pci cards from a working computer. I don't know how great your laptop is, but it probably won't support that  So recompile your kernel without this option and those error messages should be gone. (Btw I think pci hotplug is an experimental kernel feature...)

The reason I have the hotplug script installed is so that my USB mouse can work. For grins, I tried taking out the hotplug script and rebooting to see what would happen. My USB mouse no longer worked, and I was getting errors with sound from within KDE. The boot messages did go away, though. I put the hotplug script back in the default level, since I do want to use my mouse with my laptop, and I also want to listen to music.

I've partially solved my problem, thanks to another thread. There is a bug in /etc/hotplug.functions which can be easily fixed with this patch:
Code:
--- hotplug.functions.orig   2003-05-12 23:23:51.000000000 +0000
+++ hotplug.functions   2003-05-12 23:22:56.000000000 +0000

-   if [ $LOADED = false ]; then
+   if [ "$LOADED" = false ]; then
mesg "missing kernel or user mode driver $MODULE "
    fi
     done

This got rid of the unary operator expected message, but I still have this output at boot time:
Code:
Starting USB and PCI hotplugging.....
pcilib:cannot open /proc/bus/pci/02/00.0
pcilib:cannot open /proc/bus/pci/02/00.1
pcilib:cannot open /proc/bus/pci/02/00.0

pcilib:cannot open /proc/bus/pci/02/00.1
pcilib:cannot open /proc/bus/pci/02/00.0
pcilib:cannot open /proc/bus/pci/02/00.1

My computer still runs fine. I just would like to know what these messages are, and if there is anything I can do to make them go away.
