I have a 700MHz thunderbird athlon on an ASUS A7V motherboard. hda is a 15GB IBM deskstar hard drive.

the kernel says i have a PDC20265 IDE controller, and a VIA vt82c686a (rev 22) IDE UDMA66 controller.

I'm trying to boot from the gentoo-ix86-1.1a.iso.

it locks up during boot, the last lines it outputs:

hda: IBM-DTLA-307015, ATA DISK drive
hdc: Hewlett-Packard CD-Writer Plus 9500, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdg: QUANTUM FIREBALLlct10 20,ATA DISK drive
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15
ide3 at 0x7800-0x7402 on irq 10
hda: 30003120 sectors (15362 MB) w/1916KiB Cache, CHS=1867/255/63, UDMA(66)

I tried passing 'ide0=nodma' to the kernel but that didn't help. I was thinking maybe i should turn off the UDMA, but don't know how.

thanks

me again; i passed hda=noprobe to the kernel and it still locked up, so it must not be related to hda.

maybe it's because of my motherboard chipset or something like that?

turned out hdg was the problem. hdg is one of the UDMA 100 controllers which is run by a promise bios on the motherboard. it worked fine in redhat 7.2, so i'm going to go ahead and install and once i get my custom kernel going i'm sure it will be fine.

I used the kernel param

hdg=noprobe

to get the cd to boot.
