Two weeks ago I had a perfectly functioning Gentoo with sound. After update world sound stopped working. On reboot all modules still load without problems. When I type amixer I get:

root # amixer
ALSA lib conf.c:1520:(snd_config_load1) _toplevel_:6:8:Unexpected char
ALSA lib conf.c:2616:(snd_config_hook_load) /etc/asound.conf may be old or corrupted: consider to remove or fix it
ALSA lib conf.c:2463:(snd_config_hooks_call) function snd_config_hook_load returned error: Unknown error
ALSA lib conf.c:2859:(snd_config_update_r) hooks failed, removing configuration
amixer: Mixer attach default error: Unknown error

Don't really know what to do next at this point. I've done some research a gentoo bugzilla and submitted some hardware info into bug#2945

Did all alsa packages get rebuild (driver / oss / lib /utils )? Btw. I don't have the file /etc/asound.conf. Well if alsa-driver was updated to a different version you have to recompile all alsa modules and maybe some programs. Well first try to fix amixer, by rebuilding the packages lib & utils or moving the file /etc/asound.conf.

There is a notice buried in the KDE 3.0.1 update saying that alsa support has been removed. alsa 0.9 and KDE 3.0.1 won't compile together.

That file is autogenerated by alsactl store

'm actually, my alsactl (0.9.0rc1) creates /etc/asound.state

-f, --f file
Select the configuration file to use. The default
is /etc/asound.state

None of this really explains how to fix this problem. I have the exact same problem and can't make heads or tails of it. I've tried reinstalling alsa and it's components, but I always end up with the same error (posted above). If alsa 0.9 doesn't work with KDE3.0.1 then what can I do to get sound?

The maintainer of the kdemultimdia ebuild is Dan Armak (danarmak). He is waiting for an official KDE fix. I am writing this on a SuSE 8.0 system with SuSE's current KDE (3.0.1) and alsa (0.9), while listening to WCPE, so there is a fix out there somewhere. My Gentoo box is sidelined for the moment.

I have looked at the SuSE src rpms for KDEmultimedia and alsa. The most recent patches date from Dec 2001, so I wonder if the fix is easily available. Perhaps SuSE is using an older version and more recent revisions broke things?

Would love to have an answer and to have my Gentoo box back.

John
