I was given a Compaq Presario 5009SR PC by a friend who insisted that the hard drive was broken. He was not very computer literate so I decided to investigate. The drive is made by maxtor and I downloaded their diagnostic utility which could find absolutely nothing wrong with the disk.
I installed gentoo on it and everything seemed fine for a few days. Then, while compiling mozilla, it suddenly made a sound like it makes when the computer powers down and the system froze. I tried to reboot but the filesystem was corrupt and all I got was a kernel panic trying to mount the root filesystem.
So I took another look and I noticed some funny things about the drive:
1) It was jumpered as cable select, rather than master, even though it had no slave.
2) fdisk reported that the root partition was not aligned on cylinder boundaries
I deleted everthing, corrected the drive geometry information, and repartitioned and formatted and everything seems fine again.
Has anyone hade this problem or something like it? |
