!!! ERROR: x11-libs/gtk+-2.8.19 failed.
Call stack:
  ebuild.sh, line 1555:   Called dyn_setup

That means that x11-libs/cairo was not emerged with X support. You will need to re-emerge at least that package with the X USE flag, but, if you plan to use X, maybe it is better that you add that flag globally. You can do so adding the flag "X" to your USE flags in /etc/make.conf. Once it is there, you should do and emerge -uDvNa world, so all the packages in need to be recompiled to use that new flag will be recompiled, x11-libs/cairo amongst them, of course.

Once you are done with that, you can continue where you left off. And gtk+ should now compile fine.

Moved from Desktop Environments to Duplicate Threads, refer to topic "Please re-emerge [solved]".

As noted in the handbook USE flags specified via environment variables are not retained as persistent settings so, aside from when a given USE flag setting is itself transient in nature, use one of the persistent USE flag setting methods (/etc/make.conf, /etc/portage/package.use). Also, note that USE flags are case sensitive.
