Hi!

Google has launched a new customizable search engine service, and since I spend quite some time searching about gentoo specific questions, why not customize a search engine for that?

I've made it possible for anyone to edit this search engine, and please help me improve it. I mostly did it as a test, but it really works nicely. I tried some searches like xgl and nvidia, and the hits are good! Take a look and try it right here:

Tried changing the colorscheme a bit, and added some search refinements. Searching the Gentoo Manual pages and Planet Gentoo is definitely easier with this custom search. I think it's a very powerful tool that google has released! :D

Definitely more that can be done, comments and suggestions are welcome!

Looks nice. Moved from Other Things Gentoo to Gentoo Chat.

Thanks for the move, wasn't sure where to put something like this.

Anyway, the point with a customized search like this is to embedd it into a homepage. (I put together a tiny ugly example right here.)
The code you use to include this custom search is:
Code:

<!-- Google CSE Search Box Begins -->
<form id="searchbox_005352030166846560382:okqv1ixkfkq" action="http://google.com/cse">
  <input type="hidden" name="cx" value="005352030166846560382:okqv1ixkfkq" />
  <input name="q" type="text" size="40" />
  <input type="submit" name="sa" value="Search" />
  <input type="hidden" name="cof" value="FORID:0" />
</form>
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://google.com/coop/cse/brand?form=searchbox_005352030166846560382%3Aokqv1ixkfkq"></script>
<!-- Google CSE Search Box Ends -->

Is "my" search.

You can add gentoo-wiki.com to your search engine if you want more good howto results.

It's there already. I currently have 84 sites listed, but 75 of them belong to the Gentoo blog category. wiki.gentoo-xeffects.org and gentoo-wiki.com are in the Howto category, but I'll happily add more urls if anyone has any suggestions! Also, feel free to add them yourself if you want. :)

Heh, Playboy is not one of them, but I guess you can make a search so that it shows up. You can configure Google Custom Search to either "Only show results from the listed sites", or as I've done, "Prioritize the listed sites". That is, if you're looking for some weird thing about samba shares, maybe samba replication, then there is no good information among all the sites I've listed, only one irrelevant hit in the forum. Instead, since the listed sites only get higher priority, you get the Samba mailing list and official Samba manual as your first hits.

I've found solutions to some problems on forums or sites that are not Gentoo specific and I don't think there's a reason to not show those results. Instead of just looking at some sites, the results you get is from all Googles whole index, but with a Gentoo bias. Hope that clears it up. Please post any URLs you think I should add to the "priority" list.

By the way, the "Refine results" tags show results from only the tagged sites, so the Gentoo blog-tag only shows search hits from the blogs related to Gentoo that I've listed in the search.

Thanks, that was a good tip! You can add search terms to the queries in the Co-op search, so maybe I should add inurl:gentoo. :D

Got curious about OpenSearch and tried to put together one for the Gentoo Search. It's supposed to work with Firefox 2.0, wich I don't have yet. It's also supposed to work in IE 7, but I haven't tried that either. By embedding a link tag in the ugly test page it should show up automaticly in FF 2.0. Anyone care to try?

I'd also like to try making a Firefox extention that works in 1.5, but I haven't gotten that far yet. The xml to describe the search can be found here if anyone is curious. Anyone know how to convert it to the Sherlock search description format? :)

In reply to the previous post:
The "Refine results" tags can be used to focus the searches only on gentoo urls, if you want. Besides, with the filtering and prioritizing on gentoo.org the default results are pretty good.

Hi everyone,

I use the Google feature to create a search engine dedicated to Gentoo, you can access it at:
http://google.com/coop/cse?cx=003864699583036039950%3Afe_xft2wcmg
for the moment only 3 url are used to do accurate search dedicated to Gentoo:
http://www.gentoo.org
https://forums.gentoo.org
http://gentoo-wiki.com
could you help me by giving me other good urls (respond to this post) or subscribing on this new search engine. I am sure we can index some blog (or at least some posts on them) to get rid off of all the rubbish you can see more and more on results of search engines. :P

Thanks for the help :wink:
